For new family: Grizzly is described as affectionate, friendly, playful. His activity level is medium. His owner loves that he is submissive and gentle, very loveable, very calm. Grizzly likes to play with toys and will put his head under your hand for petting. When at home he will follow his owners around and be in the same room. He likes chew bones for toys and to pay fetch and tug. He’s been mainly indoors. He sleeps locked in his cage. He likes to eat Natural Balance dry and gets 2 cups throughout the day. He is housetrained and never has accidents. He goes potty on the grass/cement. He will bark and whine a little when left alone. He is crate trained in a cage and can be there for 8+ hours. He knows sit, come, paw and leave it commands. He likes to go on brisk walks and run off leash in enclosed areas. He pulls lightly on the leash, but can pull hard if there is another dog. When off-leash he wanders but comes when called.

A volunteer writes: There’s nothing grizzly at all about this smooth coated cocoa color fellow. Well groomed and the perfect weight for his size, Grizzly is happy to be leashed and go outside for the opportunity to go potty. Ignoring a large dog we passed, he reacts in kind to a small dog who barked and pulled towards him. Grizzly joined me on the park bench as I sat to take some notes, showed off his ‘sit’ and ‘shake paw’ and took his reward treats gently. He’s an active friendly boy, surrendered by his person saying that he reacts badly to other dogs in his building and on walks. We’re told that Grizzly tells his person when he needs to go out (whines and follows person around), loves his crate and will often sleep there at night, and is well behaved when left home alone. Grizzly can be shy with new people and depending on their approach to him will be friendly or hesitant. I enjoyed my time with Grizzly, and as he wagged his tail at a toddler passing us on our way back to the building, Grizzly and I chatted about his future. He needs an understanding new person or owner to give him confidence, love, structure and whatever positive reinforcement training he might need to gain those skills. He’s young with a lifetime of being a loving companion ahead of him. Ask to meet him today.
PROFILE :
Grizzly came into our care center as an owner surrender. His owner bought him from another person and has been with him for the past two years. He is no longer able to care for him because he finds that Grizzly is dog reactive. According to the owner it has gotten progressively difficult to take him outside because he will immediately react to any dogs in the building or dogs he encounters on walks.
Socialization:
Grizzly’s behavior around strangers is dependent on how they approach him. His owner mentioned that he has a tendency to get nervous, and growl if a person is approaching him head on. If the person attempts to make direct eye contact Grizzly will posture up and his body will
be tense. Similarly on walks he pull on leash, and tense up if he sees other dogs around.
Behavior:
When his owner touches his food bowls, he does not react but rather sits and waits until he is done. During bathing and brushing Grizzly remains friendly and does not seem to mind being handled. In the home he is playful and obedient with all members of the family. When he
needs to relieve himself he start whining and following you around the home to let you know he wants to go outside. He has had no accidents in the home.
For a new family to know:
His owner’s favorite thing about him is his loyalty. He is attentive and his owner feels that he would continue to thrive with some further training. He loves being inside his crate and will often sleep there at night. Grizzly is a high energy and loves to play; his favorite activities being catching balls or chewing on his toys. When he is left alone at home, he does not destroy furniture but upon coming home, his owner would often find him sleeping on his bed.
BEHAVIOR :
KNOWN HISTORY:
Altered, Owner Surrender
Previously lived with: Adult
Behavior toward children: N/A
Behavior toward dogs: Dog reactive; will react to any dog he encounters on walks
Behavior toward cats: N/A
FG/RG: None reported
Bite history: None reported
Housetrained: Yes
Energy level/descriptors: High energy/playful
Other notes: His owner mentioned that he has a tendency to become nervous and growl if a person is approaching him head on. If the person attempts to make direct eye contact Grizzly will posture up and his body will tense.
ASSESSMENT:
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body slightly trembling, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is tucked, body tense, mouth closed, head low, lip lick.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful.
Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw, tail tucked
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, sniffs, then turns away.
Summary: Grizzly warmed up significantly over the past 2 days. Initially was at back of kennel, would not approach. Grizzly was fearful and a bit cautious during his assessment, though allowed all handling to be conducted; social behavior displayed when offered a soft approach.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
PLAYGROUP:
Grizzly arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Grizzly is cautious of the yard environment. He is initially cautious of initial approach from the greeter dog, a bit tense and turns head away. He appears most comfortable briefly sniffing the greeter dog when they are turned away. The behavior team feels that Grizzly should be allowed time to acclimate to life outside the shelter environment as the only resident dog, before following up on his behavior around them.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During his initial medical examination, Grizzly was cautious and nervous.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adult home only
_X_No children (under 13) (Fearful)
_X_Single-pet home (See known history/playgroup notes)
_X_Recommend no dog parks (Due to reported high reactivity from owner in conjunction with playgroup information, the behavior department believes dog/dog behavior be appropriately managed before any attempts to work on modification.)
Potential challenges:
_X_ Grizzly has displayed fearful/shut-down behavior during his stay at our care centers and has required soft/slow approaches. Because of concerning known history as well as in shelter behavior, force-free reward based training is advised before any introduction/exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. We recommend Grizzly receive an appropriate period of decompression in a new home environment.)
