Gretzkey
Hello, my name is Gretzkey. My animal id is #16826. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 23-Dec-2017.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Gretzkey is at risk for behavioral reasons. Gretzkey has allowed some handling in the care center though startles easily. When uncomfortable Gretzkey will make all attempts to increase distance, displaying all appropriate warning signals. Due to these concerns, combined with known bite history we are seeking placement for Gretzkey only with a New Hope partner. Medically, Gretzkey has just recovered from Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, for which he completed his course of antibiotics 2 days ago. Gretzkey otherwise presents as a healthy dog.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Tall, dark and handsome, Gretzky is a bit shy in his kennel, taking one step forward, then two steps back. After this little dance he finally decides an outing would be nice and out we go. He’s a bit shy at first when I take him off leash, he explores the pen, checks me out as I made idle conversation commenting on how horribly cold it is. No question that he agrees with everything I say! Going potty over with, he wanders over to the gate to investigate the dog next door, tail wagging a mile a minute and offering tons of play bows. So cute! When that dog leaves (a female), another dog comes in (a male), and Gretzky offers more bows and tail wags. Gretzky is interested in a toy for a short while, and then comes over to me for some petting and more pithy conversation. After discussing the weather we move onto Animal Planet, The Voice and the pros and cons of the new tax bill. He’s such a great listener! Still shy, but opening up more and more, I’m reminded of a great quote from THE Wayne Gretzky: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”. Obviously this Gretzky is willing to give me a shot and a friendship is born. Give him a shot and he’ll do the same with you.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Date of intake:: 12/23/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 12/28/2017
Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary:: Gretzkey growled when being removed from his kennel. In the assessment room, he initially approach the assessor with a soft body, but jumped away when the assessor attempted to touch him. He continued approaching, but avoided handling. For this reason, the handling portion of the assessment was not conducted.
Summary:: The behavior department feels that Gretzkey may be most compatible with dogs who are respectful and calm. Behavior history around other dogs is not available due to arriving as a stray. He has been observed to be polite, though initially fearful when introduced to other dogs in the care center.
Summary (1):: 12/24: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Gretzkey is fearful but does allow approach, and reciprocates sniffs with a soft body.
Date of intake:: 12/23/2017
Summary:: Gretzkey was tense but allowed handling.
Date of initial:: 12/24/2017
Summary:: Gretzkey was tense and panicked when restrained.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Gretzkey so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Gretzkey has allowed some handling in the care center though has been observed to easily startle; when uncomfortable Gretzkey will make all attempts to increase distance, displaying all appropriate warning signals.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Gretzkey is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Gretzkey has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has displayed the potential for defensive aggression. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Gretzkey gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Gretzkey, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Minerva to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or to interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
