Grasshopper
Hello, my name is Grasshopper. My animal id is #10530. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 22-Oct-2017.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Grasshopper 10530 is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only behavior determination). Grasshopper has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. Grasshopper has no medical concerns.
My medical notes are…

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Date of intake:: 10/22/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 10/25/2017
Summary:: When approached in his kennel, Grasshopper growls and barks. When attempts to open the kennel are made, he lunges towards the door, growling and barking. For these reasons, he is unable to be safely removed from his kennel and is not a good candidate for a handling assessment.
Date of intake:: 10/22/2017
Summary:: Grasshopper was growling and reactive.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Grasshopper is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Grasshopper has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Grasshopper has been reactive to people at the care center and is unable to be safely handled. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Grasshopper to new and unfamiliar situations.
