09/24/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A winning smile, a wagging tail, a bouncy body….and a happy volunteer in awe playing with a dog retrieving a tennis ball right at her feet. I had to meet Grace while she was in action. I put a scarf around her neck, snapped a few shots and videotaped her while she was playing. What a lovely dog, found right here in our nearby park, so pretty, healthy and well groomed but most of all, so friendly, playful and sociable. Miss Congeniality! When I reached home, I realized that my video had washed off my phone and I was left only with pictures… I promised myself I would meet Grace again and do right by her. I met her again last night. She had a little cold but she had not lost her “joie de vivre”, her love for a good game and people’s company. She was ready in her kennel, a toy in her mouth and her eyes so bright…I was so glad to see her again and to spend time in the yard with her where Grace showed all the affection she has for us, humans…I sat on a bench, she hopped next to me and proceeded washing dutifully my face and hands… I could not help but hug her tightly and kiss her profusely. Time to play… Cold or no cold, Grace is a player and she ran back and forth with the tennis ball… I had my video this time to show you what a great dog she is , a charming gal who will brighten you life with her presence, her love and her positive take on life regardless of the situation. Yes, she is the “real” medicine , the cure for gloomy days and the guarantee of a sunny and happy existence. Come and meet our Grace at the Manhattan Care Center and make her your forever loyal, fun and loving companion!!!!

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/19/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/21/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Grace jumped up on the assessor during her assessment in a social manner. She allowed all handling and displayed no concerning behavior. PLAYGROUP: 9/20: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Grace rushes into the pen with a tense body, and runs after him while hard barking. History is unknown due to arriving as a stray. Grae’s history around dogs is unknown due to her arrival as a stray. The behavior department recommends continuing follow up Grace’s behavior around other dogs outside of the shelter environment, using force free methods of training. Future introductions should be conducted slowly, at a slow pace to well socialized dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Grace had a loose body and was howling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/19/17 During her initial medical exam, Grace allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Grace so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Grace jumps up a lot on people in a social manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
