09/21/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Golly is a big and impressive dog and I usually do not “do” those as I am not really strong enough. But he was too gorgeous and I could not resist. Will see…..Surprise, though…. Golly is a real gentleman, so well mannered and poised, not a puller, a very good “sitter” and a listener… I lucked in today…. Now that I am reading what his former owner said about him I realized that I should never have had any hesitation about taking him out. Golly lived in harmony with children of all ages, shared peacefully his space with a Shitzu and was friendly toward strangers. House trained(we verified this), free of handling issues from what we can tell, well behaved when left alone in the house according to the former owner, and with a low level of activity. My kind of dog in a big package. Well, there is just more to love…. Golly walks nicely on the leash and can run if needed. He seems to enjoy the sight of other dogs, particularly the ladies, wagging his tail and wanting to meet. In playgroup with his peers, Golly is polite and prefers equally well mannered friends. He loves treats, will jump for them but sits too, on command. He is cool being outfitted with a scarf and tethered for the pictures. Golly is such a handsome dog with a shiny although imperfect latte coat. His eyes sparkle with excitement to be out and in company. True, Golly is seven year old but well cared for and mostly loved, he has ahead of him quite a number of good years to be a new owner’s best friend. Come and meet him at the Manhattan Care Center. Golly is really a wonderful pet!!
09/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults/children/dogs Behavior toward children: Friendly/Gentle Behavior toward dogs: Friendly Behavior toward cats: No exposure FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: High energy Other notes: His favorite toys are bones and nylabones. He is kept indoors and knows the command sit, lay down and go inside. AGGRESSION ASSESSMENT: 09/16/2016 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Golly showed NO SIGNS OF POTENTIAL AGGRESSION on the aggression assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs Golly greets politely with loose body and wagging tail but becomes overwhelmed when the helper dog solicits bouncy play and seeks exit from the yard. His owner reports he “is very friendly with other dogs and has lived with another Shih Tzu in the house.” The behavior department feels that Golly could go to a home with another dog that is calm and either does not play or has a gentle play style. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/15/2016 Relaxed; allows all handling to be conducted. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (Suitable for an adopter with an Average amount of experience)
