02/11/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
2/11/15 18:00 Basic information: Goliath is a roughly 7 month old English bulldog mastiff mix. The Owner got him from a friend as a gift; he has owned Goliath for a month. The owner surrendered Goliath is too active for her to handle. Goliath has no health problems and has not been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Goliath is friendly playful. Goliath has lived with 2 children ages 7 and 15 years old, he is very playful around children but can play rough at times (play biting, and jumping on people). Goliath has never been around other animals so the owner has no idea how he would behave around them. Goliath has never bitten anyone. Behavior: The owner stats that Goliath is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. Goliath likes to be brushed and given bathes but has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person approaches a family member or his home he approaches them in a playful manor. The owner does not know how Goliath is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes Goliath as friendly, affectionate and playful with a very high activity level. His favorite activity is to play tug of war with his owner. In the home Goliath tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Goliath sleeps in the floor of the living on a blanket. Goliath was fed Puppy chow dry dog food twice times a day. He is house trained but can have accidents in the home in not, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. Goliath knows the commands “sit “and “stay”. For exercise Goliath is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day and can pull hard on the leash if excited. He is allowed to play off the leash in the dog park sometimes, he wanders off some to explore the surrounding are but comes back when called when off the leash. Behavior during intake: Goliath was very active with loose body and waging tail. Goliath allowed us, to scan (-), collared, pictured and placed in dog kennel.
02/14/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hard to believe that Goliath is just a seven month old puppy!! He well deserves his name! Goliath is waiting right at his door. He looks quite serious… A kennel is not a place for a giant…He wants out….Let’s go! Wow..I can understand that Goliath (received as a gift) was surrendered because he was too strong and too active….He pulls like ten horses on the leash and barks in excitement at other dogs met in the hallway. We are going to the yard…Goliath is magnificent! He has been beautifully cared for. His face might be stern but he becomes all mushy when I pet him..He is really just a babe. Off leash, Goliath is rather collected. He sits so nicely on command, takes treats politely from my hand and comes right away at the call of his name, his body all wiggly and tail wagging. He jumps high and runs after the ball that he does not guard. He gives me a hint that he might want to play with the leash. A small treat convinces him otherwise. He is a good listener..Other dogs pass by our pen and Goliath is cool with them. In playgroups with his peers, Goliath is playful, boisterous and accepts reprimand from another dog when his advances are not welcome.. Goliath lived and played with children. He comes with excellent comments from his former owner, the only reason really for him to be surrendered being his strength that she could not control. Goliath is a masterpiece, a cross between an American Bulldog and a Mastiff. He might be strong and need giant puppy training, but he is a good guy who will make an awesome adult raised by experienced and loving hands. Goliath is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to be your beloved forever best friend.
02/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Goliath pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (moderate). Goliath was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He played tug-of-war with the leash, body was soft (play growled and was not difficult to distract him). Goliath took the toy with a soft body language. Goliath was surrender to us. The owner describes Goliath as friendly, affectionate and playful with a very high activity level. Around strangers Goliath is friendly playful. Goliath has lived with 2 children ages 7 and 15 years old, he is very playful around children but can play rough at times (play biting, and jumping on people). Goliath has never been around other animals so the owner has no idea how he would behave around them. The owner stats that Goliath is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away Goliath is an active dog he need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Grab at the leash with a soft body played growl and was not difficult to distract him. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. 2/15 additional notes: Goliath is a very strong dog and has demonstrated some possible leash reactivity toward other dogs; comfortable off-leash, he barks and lunges toward other dogs on-leash or through barriers. He is difficult to manage in a shelter environment and is stressed in his kennel, so we recommend that he move into a stable home quickly. We also advise that Goliath, as a young, active dog with limited on-leash skills, will likely do best with an adopter experienced with these challenges and prepared to give him the guidance he needs to succeed.
