Ginger Ale

Hello, my name is Ginger Ale. My animal id is #17823. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 07-Jan-2018.

Reserve Ginger Ale

Ginger Ale is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex which is contagious to other dogs. Ginger Ale will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. we recommend he go to an experienced dog owner with no young children due to jumpy and mouthy behavior noted in care center.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

A volunteer writes: Ginger Ale might be a jumping bean off leash, but in the street, he is a dream to walk. No pulling, just strolling nonchalantly around the block, tail wavering above his body, all happy to discover a new world, stretch his legs, meet new people and other dogs, and be in company. Ginger Ale gets lots of compliments on the way as he is a very cute puppy, healthy looking, outgoing and with the most lovely markings on his face. Leash free in the yard, Ginger Ale is all action. He likes to jump for what he wants, toys or treats. He will run after a ball, sometimes catche it and bring it back toward me. We are not yet at the point where we are really playing together. He can sit for the items he likes, too. One just has to get his full attention. Ginger Ale is very eager to please, and he will learn in no time the good manners and canine proper behavior his new person will teach him. If your heart desires a youngster to share, for many years, your life, an active, enthusiastic and loyal friend, come and meet our Ginger Ale and make him yours…forever.

Duro was very loose bodied during intake i spent a lot of time with him in the shelter and he was very loose bodied and wiggly the entire time. He would jump up for kisses and roll over for belly rubs he was with me while i wrote this profile and was looking for attention the entire time. He does get a little mouthy at time when he gets excited but if you tell him to stop he quickly sits down. He was willing to get into the kennel when i got near it and would motion for him to get in and he was comfortable enough to take treats from me and eat food while i was petting and rubbing is head.

Summary:: Ginger Ale was social, playful, and allowed handling.

Date of initial:: 1/7/2018

Summary:: Ginger Ale was social and allowed handling.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Ginger Ale so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Ginger Ale consistently displays highly social behavior with his human caretakers outside of his kennel. He maintains a loose wiggly body throughout interactions and solicits attention from handlers.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)

Recommendations comments:: No young children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing seen at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Ginger Ale jumps up a lot on people. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: While he applies only light pressure, Ginger Ale was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Ginger Ale puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways.
