07/29/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Wow, she’s gorgeous”, “She looks so friendly”, “How long have you had her?” (I wish), “I love her coloring”, and I could go on and on with the comments and compliments that Miss Ginger received on our walk. She is gorgeous, friendly, her lush coat is a fabulous latte color topped off with lots of whipped cream, her leash manners are lovely and she’s quiet, calm and easy to be with. Off leash, we played with a ball, Ginger giving chase but reluctant to pick up that wet, soggy ball. Can’t blame her! Posing for some pictures, she’s an amazing model making my job so easy, tilting her head in concentration as I make kissy sounds at her. We exchange brief kisses, Ginger up on the bench for a brief respite from the wet ground, and carrying the ball that she finally picked up with her. Ginger has it all: great looks, a sweet, low key, fun personality, a playful side and an affectionate side. The only thing that is missing is a human pal to share it all with. Come complete her today!
Another volunteer writes: So gorgeous and sweet, Ginger was meeting a family with three small children through her door, and she was tail waggy and doing gentle little dances at all the attention. She seems to know about and enjoy children, so maybe lived with them before joining us? Always ready for a walk and the opportunity to go potty, she then loves being off leash to play, snuggle, chase a toy and play a good game of tug. Sweet, affectionate, gentle and a total delight, I love my time with her. She has a million-dollar-smile, that smile that Pitties are famous for, and she will not only light up a room with it, but your heart as well. Don’t pass up a chance to meet her. The line forms on the left!
07/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Ginger A1119535 KNOWN HISTORY: 07/23/17 Intact female, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/25/17 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Ginger was social and attention seeking throughout though displayed high energy and movement; she appears to lack impulse control as she frequently jumps up and mouths (light pressure). When engaged in play Ginger became aroused and tugged at the leash, taking some time to settle. PLAYGROUP: Ginger is polite when greeting dogs in the care center. Once comfortable, she has begun to open up and engage in bouts of play. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Ginger and respectful, social dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 07/23/17 During intake, Ginger was friendly and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/24/17 During her initial medical examination, Ginger was active and friendly. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Ginger so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: While she applies only light pressure, Ginger was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Ginger puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways. _X_Leash-biting: Ginger has been observed to leash bite, quickly escalating to a state of arousal and becomes difficult to manage at times. To prevent rehearsal of this undesired behavior, we recommend daily mental and physical stimulation to direct Ginger’s energy and enthusiasm onto more appropriate outlets rather than the leash in addition to redirecting Ginger’s attention (with treats) onto her handler to learn to “focus”.
