WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When I first met Ginger he was so eager to come out of his cage and play with me. But aside from his happy personality, I noticed his adorable looks right away! His little pouty mouth is enough to make you swoon, and his gorgeous, perfectly groomed black coat looks like that of a lab-one that the water just rolls off of after a swim. He is the perfect weight and when he walks his booty shakes from side to side, wiggling in delight. Ginger seems very housetrained and is food motivated. He is smart and with the right training and attention, can probably be taught just about anything. Ginger loves to give kisses and cuddle when you ask as well. The only thing Ginger seems to lack is a new home. Ask to meet him today!
05/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for: Ginger A1112589 KNOWN HISTORY: None Date of intake: 5/20/17 Unaltered male, stray Other notes: Ginger was social and interactive with staff at intake. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/23/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog mouths hand, light pressure. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Ginger was playful and social. During the tag item Ginger was a bit mouthy, applying light pressure, but quickly deescalates. No other concerns were seen during the handling assessment. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Ginger solicits and engages in high energy play with male and female dogs. Ginger came into the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Ginger be placed with resident dogs that match his high energy play style. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Ginger so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. Ginger displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below). _X_No young children (under 5)- Ginger seems easily aroused during play( playfully grabbing at the leash, and mouthing the assessors hand) We recommend a home without very young children, particularly due to Gingers high energy level, and willingness to use her mouth to express her level of arousal. Dog-savvy young children can be considered pending interaction. She otherwise shows good coping skills, even when aroused, and has been quite human social with her caretakers in the care center. Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition- Ginger has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Ginger teeth make contact with skin).
05/21/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Ginger solicits and engages in high energy play with male and female dogs. Ginger came into the Care Center as a stray so his previous behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Ginger be placed with resident dogs that match his high energy play style. 5/21: Ginger greets a novel female with a soft body and solicits bouncy play from her. As the session continues he mounts her, but stops when interrupted by the handlers. 5/22: Ginger solicits and engages in gentle but sloppy play with both male and female dogs, and does not read other dog’s signals well. He becomes persistent about his solicitations but does respond well to being interrupted by the handlers. 5/23-5/24: Ginger solicits and engages in gentle play in a group of playful male and female dogs, occasionally mounting but responds well to handler interruptions.
