07/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Is there a dog in this kennel? A lumpy dark shape blends with the walls and the blanket. Geeeena….I open the door. Yes, I can see now a gorgeous Cane Corso. She looks tired, like at the end of a long voyage. Her eyes light up, two shiny red amber gems. I put the leash around her neck, pull a little, and the beauty comes out slowly on her own. Gina is a big girl at a 100 pounds, but needs to put a little more weight on. This is why she gets more frequent feedings. Her coat is a mix of rust and dark chocolate that shines in the sun. Gina seems a bit sleepy, slow but friendly and sociable with people who come nearb us. She lets me fit her with a girly neckpiece. It is hot outside, and we go for a short walk around the block. She is puzzled by her image in a mirrored door. Back in the yard, Gina spots a shaded area. She needs to lay down, rest, but not before sampling with great appetite some roast beef. I sit next to her and pet her regal face and head while feeding her some treats. Gina looks quite content. We do not know Gina’s past except that she was found as a stray, and was probably a yard dog. She is right now a queen in rags, but so deserving of a castle. Gina undoubtably needs TLC, a home to call her own and a family to belong to and to love. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
07/27/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gina pulls a bit on leash. She was not sociable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Gina was calm and relaxed during handling. She had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. Gina was not interested in toys. Gina did not show any concern during the behavior assessment but she appears a bit tense and cautious, and attempts to avoid other friendly dogs. The behavior team feels that Gina may be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a home we also recommends an experience adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1: No interest. Playgroup notes: When off leash with other dogs, Gina appears a bit tense and cautious, and attempts to avoid the helper. The behavior team feels that Gina may be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a home until her behavior around other dogs can be followed up on outside of the care center environment. She arrived as a stray, so there is no information on her history with dogs.
