07/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes Gina was found abandoned in an apartment with her friend Martin, but is like a youngster who tries to attract as much attention as she can when she is with a caretaker. Although so calm in her kennel and a great walker, free in a pen, she jumps, is unfocused, hops on the bench, paws, rolls on her back for belly rubs, kisses,…… Her tail wags non stop, her butt wiggles, she loves caresses …She is so needy…She does not know what to do with herself to get all the love she can get. Gina is as hungry as a bear, absolutely ravenous for food and treats but she does not growl when I approach her bowl. She does not snatch food out of my hand and can even sit for it.. Look at her, though. Gina is skinny and currently being extra nourished, we can’t wait for her gorgeous ebony coat to begin to shine. She has so much weight to catch up with…She seems fine with her peers in the street or through a gate but is a little wary of prolonged encounters. Gina might not be used to other pooches beside Martin…We dream for Gina to find a home where she would be a beloved pet, safe, well fed and played with. She will need some guidance and a loving owner as any dog would…Will you give Gina a chance?
07/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gina came into the care center as a stray, so we cannot speak to her behavior in her previous home. She has been social and easy to handle since intake. On her relief walk she darted side-to-side and pulled hard on the leash. She was social with the assessor and allowed all handling items. She was distracted by other stimuli in the room, particularly during Tag. She did not engage with the toy. We feel that Gina’s behavior is appropriate for an adopter with an average amount of experience. However, she is a young, high-energy dog who will need daily mental and physical exercise. She will also need guidance on leash manners and on proper outlets for her energy. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away. Dog-dog: Gina is tense when greeting a female and an exuberant male, but has a relaxed body posture when greeting a calmer male. She is introduced to him and becomes tense, lip licking when the greeting lingers.
07/09/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Gina was initially a bit tense during intial playgroup introduction. Gina has begun to display interest in engaging in play with other dogs. Due to the fact that it appears Gina may need time to become comfortable around unfamiliar dogs, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction and slow, positive introductions at a pace comfortable for both Gina and any other dog. Due to the fact that she arrived as a stray, it is not known how her behavior around dogs will translate into a home. 7/9: Gina is tense when greeting a female and an exuberant male, but has a relaxed body posture when greeting a calmer male. She is introduced to him and becomes tense, lip licking when the greeting lingers. 7/12: Gina is intially tense. She begins to relax and loosen, the solicits running chase play. 7/13, 14: Gina again, solicits running chase play, though initially tense. 7/15 update: Gina engages in running play with a group of males. She offers a loud correction and mouths any dogs that attempt to mount her. 7/16 update: Gina engages in soft play with a group of males. She offers correction if mounted.
