04/29/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/29/17 13:55 Giada A1110419 is a young female tan & white American Staffordshire mix that was found in a park in the Bronx by the Park’s Department. They stated she was a little nervous at first (low body position with his tail tucked) but allowed them to corner her with a dog crate which she walked into to be brought into our BXAC location. During intake Giada walked out of the crate she was brought in and walked to the back of the shelter. She didn’t seem to like the leash and tried to move away from it; she would lay on the ground motionless not wanting to be moved or coaxed much. After a while of sitting and spending time with her she allowed to be scanned (-) & collared. I was unable to get a picture of Giada on the backdrop as she didn’t want to move to stand or sit on it. To get Giada onto the transport van she was guided with a leash around her hind end/hips to get her to walk as she didn’t appear too comfortable with being carried in our arms (but she did allow petting on her head/face area)

05/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/29/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/1/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Dog is tense. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Dog is crouching, head low. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Giada appeared very fearful in the assessment room and during the assessment. She avoided being near the assessor and did not approach with coaxing. She was tense and had a tucked tail through the assessment. PLAYGROUP: 4/30: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Giada is a bit nervous and avoids approach. She keeps to herself and explores the yard. The behavior department recommends that future introductions be conducted slowly, to respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/29/17 During her initial medical exam, Giada was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Giada so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Giada is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Potential challenges:
_X_Fearful: Giada gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Giada, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Giada to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
