02/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gia previously lived with 1 adult, a cat and children ages 7 to 21. The owner stated Gia is relaxed and respectful towards the children but didn’t play much and with adults Gia plays somewhat rough. The owner mentioned around strangers Gia becomes tense and will start to bark, growl and either back away or lunge forward. Gia has lived with cats and other dogs. The owner also stated when around cats Gia is respectful and doesn’t pay much attention to them. It was reported by the owner Gia will growl if attempting to take a treat away from her. The owner describes Gia as confident, friendly and affectionate. The owner mentioned Gia is house trained, crate trained, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone. At intake it was reported Gia was tense and barking, she did not allow the counselor to handle her. During SAFER Gia came into the assessment room nervous and timid, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Gia lip curled at the assessor on the first paw squeeze item. She displayed no interest in the toy item during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit tense and fearful, her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed, and lip licks. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog freezes and lip curls. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Gia greets very griefly at the gate but quickly retreats to the far corner. The gate was opened and the helper dog was leashed, giving Gia the opportunity to initiate any further interactions between herself and the other dog. She does enter the adjacent pen but avoids the helper dog.
