08/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When you need a friend…when you want to play…when a big doggie smile would brighten your day…who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters!!! It’s a shame there’s only one of him to go around because GB is just what we all need in our lives; a good-hearted, beautiful boy with a brilliant smile and enough energy to keep up with even the most active of families. Strong, smart and well-versed in all the niceties of pethood, GB is easy to leash, seems house trained, knows commands for come and sit and takes treats with a gentle touch. Though he pulls pretty enthusiastically on leash, he is responsive to correction and very happy to see other dogs (with a real eye for ladies!) so much so that his tail goes into overdrive whenever they pass by. When GB realizes we’re not going into one of the outdoor pens where playgroup takes place he jumps his front paws up on the gate to tell me that’s where he belongs, off-leash and fancy free–told you he was smart! I let him know it’s a no-go and he settles for the consolation prize of a toy which he happily plays with all by himself; tossing, shaking and ultimately destroying it with gusto and I can guarantee he’d be thrilled to find a welcome basket of tough chew toys waiting for him in his new home. He may not have shown off his best manners during his behavior assessment but out on a date Ghostbusters is friendly, fearless and fun with a capital F. If you’re looking to light up your life with the feel-good energy that only a playful big boy can bring, I think you know exactly who ya gonna call…
08/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ghostbusters pulls a bit on the leash. He was sociable toward the handler- soft body, low wag. During the assessment Ghostbusters was a bit excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. He became over aroused during the tag interaction body checking the assessor, during the last tag he stands his ground and makes direct eye contact. The behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety concerns. During the resources Ghostbusters took the toy away but had soft body language. Because of the concerning behavior noted during tag, the behavior department feels that Ghostbusters would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Force-free based training is advised to help Ghostbusters thrive and succeed. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, but does not apply pressure. Or, dog licks hands while lips are long. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. At the end of the game he stands on his ground and makes direct eye contact. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Ghostbusters greets with a soft body and shows continued interest in re-approach. He sniffs intently at the female helper dog’s rear which may be rooted in sexually motivated behavior. Ghostbusters is currently unaltered, however. The behavior team feels Ghostbusters should have a thorough pre-adoption interaction before consideration into a home with a resident dog.
