07/07/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/07/16 21:04 A1080343 Chunk is an ~4 year old male Bully Breed mix. He was brought to ACC by police with another dog, A1080344 Muenster, after they were removed from their home. Chunk had a loose wiggly body and wagging tail in his crate. He allowed me to leash him and walked beside me on his leash without pulling. He sat on my feet and wagged his tail while I talked to and pet him. He didn’t react and maintained a soft body, open mouth, and wagging tail while I collared him, scanned him (-), and looked at his teeth. I stooped down and he leaned into my chest and then my leg and then rolled to his side and then his back while I pet his tummy.
07/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Anyone order an adorable hippo/meatball/piglet hybrid? No?? Perfect. Then he’s alllll mine. Toast is the absolute most with his silver coat, little legs, perpetual grunts and MEATBALL! (Apologies, I lost myself.) 1 year-old Toast came under our care along with his housemate Tommy (A1080344) and if there is a cuter and sweeter pair of bookends out there, I’d like to be first in line to meet them. Toast is more of a loaf at 75 lbs but he’s light as a wafer on leash and polite as tea and crumpets with his treats. He takes them gently from my hand time and again, and sits for more, sprinkling in some ‘grunt, grunt, grunts’ along the way. Toast is also a fan of toys and a stuffed parrot quickly makes its way into our loving hippo’s mouth. He easily relinquishes it to me in return for a treat, and then off our little piggy goes, on to his next adventure. He quickly returns to me, however, for one brief moment. To give me a ‘SLURP!’ A surprise kiss, right across my face, before he’s off again. This little hippo is hungry, but for affection, love, and a family all his own. Could that be you? Toast is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC. Video was taken right before his name was changed from Ghost to Toast.
07/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Toast was brought into the care center by police, so we have no information on his behavior in his previous home. He arrived with another male dog of similar size, build, and behavior. He was easy to handle during his medical examination. He pulls hard on leash when walked, but was social with the assessor when brought into the room for his behavior evaluation. Toast allowed all handling without issue, frequently jumping on the assessor for attention. He did not engage with the toy. No concerning behaviors were seen during his SAFER assessment so we feel Toast is appropriate for an adopter with an average amount of experience. We recommend a front-clip harness to help address Toast’s pulling on leash, and he may need some reward-based guidance to learn not to jump (jumping, if undesired, should be extinguished by removing attention when he jumps, turning your back or walking away, and then rewarding him with attention when he has all 4 feet on the ground). We also recommend teaching Toast “drop” and playing trade up games; nothing should ever be taken away from him without trading for a larger reward. Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches and jumps on the Assessor at the end of the game. He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest.
07/13/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Toast arrived into our care with another male dog, however there is no background information on their relationship in-home. When introduced to dogs in our care, Toast has briefly displayed interest in play, however is primarily intent on mounting the female helper dog. Toast was recently altered, but it can not be said for certain how soon it will take for any sexually motivated behaviors to decrease over time. The behavior team recommends a pre-adoption interaction between Toast and any potential resident dogs. It is unknown how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home. 7/13: When off leash with oher dogs, Toast solicits play wih intent to mount. 7/14: Toast is sexuall motivated. He does not reciprocate play when solicited.
