07/31/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Forget Pokemon GO, we’ve got your real-life Geodude right here! He’s gorgeously hunky and very appropriately named for a ‘gray boulder’ pokemon often found on mountain trails and open fields–the very habitat our doggy Geodude would get a big kick out of himself. We don’t have too many mountains in NYC so have to settle for a brisk walk around the park instead where he shows off his fun and friendly energy, pulling eagerly to meet fellow pups and letting me pet, snuggle and kiss him all over. Geodude takes care of his business within minutes of stepping outside and he’s already trained to sit and softly snarfle treats on command too. There’s nothing more satisfying than watching an underweight dog enjoying his food and this guy is lip-smackingly keen to provide a good show! Unlike his pokemon namesake, Geodude’s not one to sit around quietly waiting for life to come to him and he craves freedom as much as he does treats, trying to catch the attention of everyone who passes his kennel with ‘look at me!’ barking and big tail wags. He’d make a perfect sidekick for off-leash games or on-leash jogging and has so much personality and love to give to an active, dog-savvy family of any size. Are you ready to start a lifelong adventure with a new BFF guaranteed to keep you smiling and on your toes? Then forget about ‘catching ’em all’ and just make sure you hurry into our Manhattan Care Center to catch the one and only Geodude, he can’t wait to meet you!
07/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Geodude came into our center after a member of the public found him as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. He had a wiggly body and wagging tail upon intake, took treats gently from admissions counselor, allowed all handling. Geodude pulled very hard on leash for his relief walk. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, lip lick. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, slight wagging tail. Geodude was distracted and unresponsive to Tag game, body soft. He did not pull his paw back on first Squeeze attempt, pulled paw back on second. Geodude showed no interest in Toy. When off leash with a female dog, Geodude is sexually motivated. He becomes frustrated and anxious and begins to growl and snap at the other dogs face. The Behavior Team feels Geodude would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners. Geodude may do best as the only resident dog. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed Squeeze 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with a female dog, Geodude is sexually motivated. He becomes frustrated and anxious and begins to growl and snap at the other dogs face.
07/30/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
7/30: When off leash with a female dog, Geodude is sexually motivated. He becomes frustrated and anxious and begins to growl and snap at the other dogs face. Geodude has also shown concerning reactivity toward other dogs in his kennel. When dogs pass his kennel he barks, lunges and snaps, often biting at kennel bars when he is unable to get to the dog. He is unable to be distracted and will continue to bark, growl and snap once out of his kennel, not ceasing until the dogs are out of sight. The behavior department advises against placing Geodude into a home with other dogs and recommends muzzle training him so his behaviors can be safely managed and modified without serious safety risk to other dogs on the street.
