07/28/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I don’t know what or who Gatsby Jet is, but I know who The Great Gatsby was, and like The Great Gatsby, our Gatsby should be wearing a top hat, a bow tie, and living the high life on the Gold Coast. But he’s not, he’s with us, keeping his balance, figuring out the ropes and making friends. Tail wagging in his kennel, his Bull Terrier good looks are hard to miss. He’s leashed easily, and we’re out the door, Gatsby going potty the moment we’re outside. He likes to follow me around the pen, tail wagging, soliciting petting, coming when called, and giving some kisses. Gatsby wasn’t interested in toys or treats, but when a new person came into the yard he was right there, tail wagging his ‘hello, new friend’. Calm, elegant, and gorgeous in his pristine white coat and perfect weight, his favorite thing this afternoon was hugs and kisses up on the bench with me, and then with staff. Rocking his behavior assessment on all counts, he’s the low key, fun kind of a guy you just want to hang out with after a nice walk. Wag, kiss, explore, wag, kiss, hug, and wag…sounds good doesn’t it?

INTAKE BEHAVIOR Date of intake 7/15/2017 During intake, Gatsby Jet was initially fearful but warmed up and allowed handling/social. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 7/15/2017 During his initial medical exam, Gatsby Jet was a bit tense and head shy, but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Gatsby Jet so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Gatsby Jet displays as having a high level of energy. He will benefit from having daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercise. We recommend walks, runs, exercise and play to positively direct his enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Due to owner reporting a past bite, the behavior department recommends Gatsby Jet be placed with a New Hope placement partner. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques may make any challenges worse. Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration – Gatsby Jet has shown some reactivity when passing other dogs barking toward him from their kennels at the care center. It should be noted this behavior was not initially seen, and we cannot be certain if it will appear in other contexts, however in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Gatsby Jet may show behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating. His response decreased when walking past with a toy in his mouth.
