Fulhenzio

Hello, my name is Fulhenzio. My animal id is #18969. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 22-Jan-2018.

Fulhenzio is at risk for behavior reasons. The shelter environment is a particularly difficult one for Felhenzio, who is becoming more dog reactive with each day here. At the care center, Fulhenzio has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Once out of the kennel and off lead, Fulhenzio demonstrates good sociability with other dogs. We recommend placement within a dog experienced home, one that can work with him to properly assess and address these issues. Medically, we have no concern for Fulhenzio, who presents as a healthy dog.

Let’s get to know each other a bit more…

A staff member writes: Fulhenzio’s big brown eyes and smiling face will surely catch your eye right away! Once you stop in front of his kennel the real show starts, with his wiggly body and endlessly wagging tail, you can tell what he wants more than anything in the world is to take a walk with you. Once we get outside he calms right down, explores the yard and leans all the way in to my legs for petting and rubs. At first he doesn’t seem to have much interest in the toys, but with some encouragement he plays and plays, running back and forth and shaking them all around. While he will need some help learning polite leash manners, this smart cookie already knows to sit for treats and waits to have his leash replaced to go back into his kennel, where he flops down on his bed and waits to wiggle and wag right into your heart.

My medical notes are…

Weight: 53 lbs

Basic Information:: Fulhenzio is a male black and white medium mixed breed dog that is estimated to be 1 year old. He was brought in as a stray when someone that was watching Fulhenzio wasn’t able to watch him any longer due to him being destructive at home and was unable to contact the owner.

Summary:: Fulhenzio approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft body. He was social throughout the assessment, allowed all handling, and displayed no concerning behaviors.

Summary:: DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: The behavior department feels that Fulhenzio may succeed best with slow introductions to playful, highly tolerant female dogs. No history around dogs is available due to arriving as a stray. In the care center. Fulhenzio has engaged in running play with female dogs. With continued interaction, Fulhenzio has been able to self regulate play behavior, and with time has demonstrated the ability to match the play styles of other dogs. During introduction to another male dog, Fulhenzio appeared tense, but remained respectful and kept distace.

Summary (1):: 1/24: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Fulhenzio immediately rushes up and follows the greeter’s play behavior. Fulhenzio initially becomes aroused and begins to tense and vocalize. This behavior is easily interrupted and Fulhenzio is eventually able to continue play without further need for interruption

Summary (2):: 1/25: Fulhenzio engages in play with a female dog. He briefly engages with a playful male dog, though eventually becomes tense and keeps distance from the male dog. He continues to approach and solicit play from the female dog.

Summary (3):: 1/26: Fulhenzio engages in bouncy appropriate play with a female dog.

Date of intake:: 1/22/2018

Summary:: Fulhenzio had a loose body but appeared anxious, whining and pacing.

Date of initial:: 1/23/2018

Summary:: Fulhenzio was active and reacted to dog. He allowed all handling.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Fulhenzio so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: When Fulhenzio sees dogs, he will focus, pull forward, and bark continuously while they are in his presence. After observed leash reactivity, Fulhenzio received Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) for this reactivity here in the care center in a controlled environment. While Fulhenzio has responded very well to the exercises provided to him and has successfully diverted his attention to high-value items in exchange for his attention, he is still reactive towards dogs on-leash. Despite the behavior team’s best efforts in implementing behavior modification protocol, it is unlikely Fulhenzio will thrive in this environment, and is more likely to respond better to these protocols in a consistent, stable home environment.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No dog parks: It is recommended that Fulhenzio be introduced dogs in a controlled setting due to apparent selectivity around other male dogs.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: House soiling: Fulhenzio is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Destructive behavior: Fulhenzio is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, such as chewing on furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Fulhenzio will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so he can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Fulhenzio has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Fulhenzio may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
