A volunteer writes: I wish I had a fuchsia coat for this gorgeous girl as it would set off her beautiful black and white coat perfectly. Petite, a bit shy, but so happy to make friends, her tail wags shyly at all. Fuchsia is likely housetrained and as she was trembling in the cold we didn’t stay out long. Comments on her walking log from other volunteers all shout out a theme: SWEET! No matter what other words are used, everyone says sweet. And she is. As we were going upstairs to her kennel a man was coming down and Miss Fuchsia wagged her tail, looked up at him and promptly turned around to follow him! We all laughed, a little sadly actually, and I promised Fuchsia she’d be leaving with her new person soon. Let’s make her wish come true today.
01/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 1/20/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/23/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is downs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Focused on exit. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Fuchsia was fearful throughout her assessment but allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Proximity Sensitive: These dogs have had a poor history of social experience with other dogs or could be extremely fearful in the shelter environment. They are socially shy and may exhibit fearful body posturing (tucked tail, head low, snarling etc), defensive posturing (lunging, barking, snarling etc.) or physically avoid/ignore other dogs. They will emit warning signals to the other dog to back away but if they are forced to interact they may snap. PLAYGROUP: Fuschia has not been comfortable interacting with other dogs in the care center. Due to lack of available history paired with the observations made in the care center, the behavior department recommends a single-dog residence for Fuschia at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/20/17 During her initial medical exam, Fuchsia allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful (It is important to always go slow and give Fuchsia the option to walk away from any social interaction. Fuchsia should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Fuchsia’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Fuchsia would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.) _X_Single dog home (see PLAYGROUP above)
01/22/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Fuschia has not been comfortable interacting with other dogs in the care center. Due to lack of available history paired with the observations made in the care center, the behavior department recommends a single-dog residence for Fuschia at this time. 1/22: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Fuchsia is nervous and avoidant of the male greeter dog. She keeps to herself and anxiously seeks exit. She turns away from approach from the greeter dog. When unable to exit or distance herself comfortable, she runs up to greeter dog and air-snaps toward his face. When the greeter dog turns around, she retreats. 1/27: Fuchsia briefly greets a female but lip curls and snaps at a lingering face-to-face greeting. 1/31: When approached by the helper dog, Fuschia is uncomfortable and offers strong defensive correction.
