07/22/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/22/17 19:55 During intake freckles was very friendly with a loose wiggly body and fast wagging low tail. He allowed all handling and collaring and allowed the counselor to look in his mouth. He was licking the counselors hands and also pushing his body into the counselor’s for affection. He was well behaved with the officers who brought him and was friendly when at the precinct waiting for transport.
07/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Probably named for the little spattering of freckles across his nose, Freckles is all about snuggles and making friends. Wagging his tail at everyone we passed on our short walk, when the rain started he just wagged his tail harder and kept going. Stopping in a doorway to wait out the rain, Freckles made himself comfy on my lap as we watched all the people scurry by. His ears perked up as other dogs passed, but he stayed perched on my lap, with an occasional look up at me as if to say, ‘how smart are we to be on this stoop out of the rain?’ Once the rain let up a bit we head into the backyard, and our short walk gave Freckles the chance to potty again. Fun, friendly, playful, an active cuddler, this compact little guy is adorable. Polite when interacting with a female greeter dog (he’s not been with males as of this writing), Freckles is all about charming the socks off everyone he meets. While he can be mouthy in play (no pressure), he’s so friendly and good natured that all is forgiven. He’s on the cusp of becoming an awesome adult dog and is waiting for you to lead him. Freckles made me smile and will make you smile as well. Come meet him today.
07/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Freckles A1119425 KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/22/17 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/24/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed or back. Toy: 1. No interest Summary: Freckles was social throughout the assessment though appears to have a low threshold for arousal; when engaged in play Freckles becomes overstimulated (leash biting and growling (play)), his body remains soft throughout. PLAYGROUP: Freckles is polite when greeting female dogs, and engages in brief running play. He has not yet been introduced to another male due to lack of appropriate helper dog. Slow introductions are recommended between Freckles and resident dogs. In home behavior around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: 07/22/17 Upon intake, Freckles was friendly with a loose and wiggly body; he allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/23/17 During his initial medical examination, Freckles was active, friendly and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Freckles so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control him impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: While he applies only light pressure, Freckles was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Freckles puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways.
