07/14/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/14/17 18:20 The finder only had the dog overnight but she says he did very well with her children and tried to play with them, the oldest is 12 and the youngest is 4. The finder also has a medium sized large breed female dog at home and the dog attempted to play with her also. Franklin allowed the finder to touch his food bowl and was not resource guarding. Upon intake, Franklin had a very loose body, was wagging his tail, and allowed being collared and having his picture taken.
07/19/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A handsome honey with a heart of gold, Franklin draws admiring crowds wherever he roams but what he’d really love is to settle down with a forever family he can call his very own. Check out these qualifications and I think you’ll agree, he’s the stuff adoption dreams are made of: boisterously playful with kids and dogs, friendly toward strangers, a good leash walker, seemingly house trained and full of happy curiosity about the world around him. There must be a generous helping of hound genes up his family tree as his investigative skills rival Sherlock Holmes and a brisk stroll through the park quickly slows to a detailed leaf-by-leaf inspection with lots of sniffing and even a few tentative taste tests! Franklin can be a bit shy at first but it’s the work of a moment to earn his trust and once you do, his inner puppy happily comes out to playbow and run around with toys or better yet, his fellow pups. He’s a high energy youngster searching for an active home and while he may not be trained in commands just yet, Franklin’s bright, eager and ready to learn and will catch on even faster with a four-legged brother or sister to look up to–social dogs are encouraged to apply! This sweet guy has the answers to all your doggie play time needs so there’s only one riddle left to solve…who’s black and white and beautiful all over? Franklin hopes you guess quickly and that you’re heading for our Manhattan Care Center to take him home today.
07/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 7/14/17 Unaltered Male, Stray (With finder for one night) Previously lived with: Adults, children (ages four-twelve, and another dog) Behavior toward children: Playful Behavior toward dogs: Playful with the dog in the home Resource guarding: None reported SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/16/17 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog jumps up, grabs leash, and mouths assessor briefly. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Franklin was social throughout his assessment and allowed all handling. He became over aroused during tag, jumping up, grabbing the leash, and mouthing the assessor briefly, but quickly settled. PLAYGROUP: Franklin plays exuberantly with female dogs in the care center. He has not yet been introduced to another male dog due to lack of playful males available at the time. The behavior department feels that based on observation, Franklin may be most compatible with other dogs who are playful or tolerant of play behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Franklin had a loose body and allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/14/17 During his initial medical exam, Franklin was social and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Franklin so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to how quickly Franklin became over aroused during tag, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: Franklin becomes quickly over aroused when in the presence of excitement. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Franklin to be calm in exciting situations, by rewarding him with treats for calm behavior. Any time he becomes over aroused, people should walk away from and ignore him. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Franklin has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Franklin’s teeth make contact with skin).
07/15/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Franklin plays exuberantly with female dogs in the care center. He has not yet been introduced to another male dog due to lack of playful males available at the time. The behavior department feels that based on observation, Franklin may be most compatible with other dogs who are playful or tolerant of play behavior. Slow introductions are recommended between Franklin and resident dogs. 7/15: When off leash with another dog, Franklin engages in exuberant bouncy play. He will offer playbows and paw slaps in solicitation. 7/16-17: Franklin initially is forward and a bit aroused upon entering the pen. He softens and becomes less aroused as interaction and play continues.
