08/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: “Frankie and Johnny were sweethearts…” I’m not sure I know a Johnny but Lordy, how envious of him I am. Of course it’s hard to imagine anyone not being sweethearts with one as sweet as 3 year-old Frankie. With his big, puppy eyes, and small, floppy ears he could easily bring a smile to anyone’s face and send the most cold-hearted among us into bursts of song. Little Frankie was found as a stray on the street. There is no doubting the hunger in his belly then or now. He is painfully thin in his fawn and cream coat. When he breaks into a smile (a frequent occurrence) his beautiful head seems twice the size of his small body and admittedly on first seeing him, quiet as a mouse in his kennel, you do a double-take at reading that he is three years of age. But, as it seems to always go in shelter life, those who should want the most are those that want the least. Frankie is lovely, affectionate, snuggly, and calm. And a short walk and a good cuddle are all he needs for a good day. He walks beautifully on leash, appears to be housebroken, and seemed curious about and interested in other pups while out on our walk. One lucky someone is about to meet their special sweetheart very, very soon. Might that be you? Frankie is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
08/11/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Frankie walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Frankie followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag. He took the toy away with a soft body language. Frankie was found as a stray eating food out of a garbage pile. Police were flagged down to pick him up. Officers pet Frankie and tolerated touch, officers hand fed treats to Frankie and Frankie was relaxed and wagging his tail while he ate the treats. Officers stated there was a crowd of people, both adults and kids, loud and getting close to Frankie, and Frankie would simply sniff and tolerate the crowd and loudness. Officers stated they opened up the carrier and Frankie went right in. Frankie was relaxed during the car ride to our shelter. Frankie did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, ears back, wagging tail. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Frankie initially displays a bit of a tense body upon enetering the pen and being greeted. He softens, however begins to then display more intently sexually motivated behavior (attempting to mount, Frankie is unaltered). When solciited with play, Frankie ignores. The behavior team feels that Frankie may do best if given time to decompress and acclimate as the only resident dog until his behavior around dogs can be followed up on outside the care center. Frankie arrived as a stray, so his history around dogs is unknown.
