A volunteer writes:
Frank is at the back of his kennel, a little ball of white and grey fluff with huge dark button eyes. Frank did not seem to want to come out  but after a little convincing, he slowly moved forward and exited his den. He had a slight head tilt. This is when I realized that his head and neck were trapped in a thick carcan of heavily matted hair  as hard as a rock…How did it get so bad ? Poor Frank..So much neglect…and probably for a while… Our groomer will be coming to the rescue to make Frank not only comfortable but also  a most beautiful and attractive little dog.Frank is a bit shy and lost but was a little more daring at our second outing.. He accepts caresses  and is hauled on my lap without problem. After some hesitation, he walks well on the leash and even does his business. Other dogs do not get much of his attention. I wonder what mix Frank really is? He needs for sure a caring and loving owner to mend his past and  prove to him that life as a pet can be awesome…Frank is at the Manhattan Care Center dreaming to start a new chapter in his life with you.
SAFER

Frank walks calmly on leash. He was fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment.  Frank had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash.  He was not interested in toys.

The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter.  We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Frank is more comfortable and settled in a home environment.

Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language,  mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.

Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful.

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw.

Toy 1. No interest.
