04/11/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I like to chew more than I can eat and I eat with my eyes. That is true with my choice of dogs, sometimes. Flounder sits like a little choir boy in his kennel, in the corner, right by his door. His eyes do all the talking. That little tusk of his is speaking to me too. “I am a GOOD boy, please, take me out.” All right. Flounder flies out of his ward, ignoring the barking of his peers. We are in the street in no time. He is a puller, but a harness does the job. Doing his business helps, too. Flounder is a big marker. He pulls toward other dogs as his tail wags in excitement. He can sit on command and absolutely loves treats that he requests with impatience. Flounder likes to be free in the yard. He is then like a fish in the water. Happy. He likes tennis balls and will run and jump with his whole height to give head shots and catch the ball. He is not all about action and does like caresses and soft talks. Flounder is a good looking guy “between two ages”, well nourished and well dressed. He is strong and a bit opinionated but sociable and affectionate and with some fine tuning, could make a really nice, fun and loving companion. Flounder is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to belong again. Another volunteer writes: How can you not love this hunky boy with a snaggle tooth and an opinion? He’s gorgeous in his soft white ‘ready for primetime’ coat made for petting, he seems to be housetrained, and will benefit from a harness and or some leash training. He has the best snaggle tooth on the planet which doesn’t stop him from gently taking treats and enjoying some play time along with a good butt scratch. Once he knew I had treats, I was his new best friend as he followed me around the pen, giving me a quick woof if I wasn’t fast enough with a treat. Quickly in my lap for a brief hug, it was back to exploring the pen and enjoying more treats. Just think how easy this handsome fellow will be to train with positive reinforcement (treats)! I love a dog with a personality, and Flounder definitely has one. Come meet him, watch his tail wag his hello and you’ll be smitten. I promise!

Summary: Flounder was very distracted throughout his assessment, sniffing around the room and not paying attention to the assessor. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with another dog, Flounder is initially stiff while greeting. He will then soften offering toe taps and playbows. 4/8: Flounder will become bouncy when solicited by the playful, female dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/6/17 During his initial medical exam, Flounder was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Flounder so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety: Flounder has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) through the SAFER. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Flounder, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. Positive reinforcement, reward based training is recommended for any issues that do present in the home. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Flounder is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trai
