09/12/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: True to her name, our little Flora looks pretty and fresh as a pansy and like an unexpected bouquet she’s ready to brighten your mood and color your life beautiful from the moment you meet her! Playful as a puppy and just as sweet, Flora loves going to the park and exploring, playing tug with a plushie (no guarding) and kissing and cuddling up a storm with her two-legged friends. She pulls a bit on leash but walks well in harness, seems to be quite house trained and sits like a champ on command…if you show her a treat first! After a shy start in playgroup she’s now bouncing around with the other boys and girls like she was born to it and once she’s settled into a new family I bet Flora would love to check out the local dog run and make some new four-legged friends. Scoring great ‘marks’ on her behavior evaluation and equally well-suited to a home where she’s the only pampered Princess or one where she shares her kingdom with a pack of furry siblings, fabulous Flora is Adoptable with a capital A! Neat, sweet, petite and super sociable, as long as there’s love to be shared, Flora wants in. Open your heart (and your arms) and welcome her home today.
09/07/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/6/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/7/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Summary: Flora appeared fearful at times during her assessment, backing away from quickly movements. She was social for the most part but when she became fearful she backed away and took a minute to come back to approach the assessor again. PLAYGROUP: Flora may take time to warm up in the presence of unfamiliar dogs. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. In the care center, Flora has begun to display interest in gentle, bouncy play with other dogs. She may become uncomfortable with and aroused by rougher styles of play. The behavior department feels Flora would be most compatible with well socialized dogs who are respectful or gently playful. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Flora had a soft body and wagging tail, she allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/6/17 During her initial medical exam, Flora was active and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Flora so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below)
Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Though Flora appears to be a social dog, quick movements seem to frighten her, with her backing away from them. It is important to always go slow and give Flora the option to walk away from any social interaction. Flora should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Flora’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Flora would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
