10/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The moment I saw 2 year-old Flash–slight and still, hugging her kennel wall–I loved her. As I jiggle my leash in front of her door, I watch her eyes go bright. “Yes, a walk sounds nice. But is it OK? What’s beyond those doors?” After some time and some treats, she decided at least I was alright, and our time together began. As it happens, what was beyond those doors was sun, grass, and wind. I watch her see it all, blink hard as if just waking, and decide to forge ahead. She walks beautifully on leash, trotting next to me then just ahead. And after a block and a half, that tail finally untucks. As we round corner three, Flash sits for a treat and, despite her protruding ribs, she takes it gently. After our walk, we seize the moment for outdoor photos, and Flash indulges me without concern. She accepts pets and treats, sniffs her toys and the air, and watches calmly as people pass by. When we’re through, I sit with her, and I offer her one last treat. She takes it softly, of course, but when my empty palm lingers there for one moment more, she suddenly rests her paw in my hand. She leaves it there. I don’t move mine. “Oh no,” a young passerby whispers as she stops short at the sight of us. Not because she’d seen something terrible or sad. But because her heart was just stolen. And in a flash, so was mine. Flash is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC for a gentle, quiet and calm home; for a soft embrace; for someone to love; for someone to belong to. Another volunteer writes: “Hey, I’m down here waiting for a belly rub!!! When I really like you I’ll let you rub my belly, otherwise I’m happy just holding paws on our first date. I’ll also use my paw to let you know that I’d like more petting please. I was scared when I first got here, but everyone is so nice and people want to take me for a walk which I love to do. I wag my tail at my new friends, and some of them laugh at me when I flop over and show my belly. But hey, sometimes that’s what a girl has to do to get some attention! I love to snuggle with people and I like to play with calm, respectful dogs.

Due to arriving as a stray, it is unknown how Flash’s behavior will translate into a home with dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/10/2016 During her initial medical examination, Flash displayed all appropriate warning signals indicating she was uncomfortable; tolerated minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Flash has been observed to become highly social upon a soft approach, becoming soft/loose/friendly though can present as an initially fearful dog. Force-free, reward based training is recommended when introducing Flash to new and unfamiliar situations.)
