A volunteer writes: Magneto is all about living large. Magneto is the dog I would fancy to own…if I was younger and stronger. Magneto is gorgeous, a red head who rarely abandons his smile. His eyes sparkle. He is ready for any fun adventures you might present him with. He is game. He likes treats, but he loves toys and balls. He is eager to play, jump, run and catch. He does not guard. He will always sit briefly before any throw. He is a good listener despite his enthusiasm. He is LIFE in person and it is quite beautiful to watch. Magneto is a big puller on the leash, as expected. He does his business with some marking. Magneto has a soft streak, too. After the game and a few treats, he sits with his tush on my foot and enjoys a good petting session, his tennis balls nearby, waiting for him. I like Magneto, and I hope that he will soon find his match.
Another volunteer writes: Is it true blondes have more fun? Let’s ask Magneto–our resident blonde! Yes indeed, says Magneto! We’re energetic, playful, love toys, love to run, a good butt scratch is perfect from time to time, as is a good roll in cuddle. A box full of toys is ideal. I can amuse myself endlessly until I tire myself out. I’ll bring my toy over to you, drop it at your feet and back up a step or two to give you plenty of room to pick it up and throw it for me. I loved watching the dog in the adjoining pen play, standing up on the fence to get a better look. I was happy to make a new friend ’cause I sure needed to get outside to go potty. My perfect home is an active one–lots of walks, maybe even jogging, and needless to say plenty of toys and playtime. All the volunteers here laugh at me as I always have such a good time playing, and and I’d really like to spend the rest of my life doing just that–with some snuggle time thrown in too, of course. So, if you’re the exercise type I need to meet you, let’s get this show on the road!
The Foster Writes: Magneto is SUCH a sweet boy. It didn’t take long for him to melt my heart…he’s so full of life and joy that you can feel it flooding the room. You just can’t help feeling good around him! He loves scratches and pats on his butt, and will curl up next to you on the couch, putting his head right on your lap. He just wants to be near you all the time. He has wonderful manners – doesn’t whine at all when I’m leaving in the morning, and doesn’t need to be crated as he knows not to chew up what he shouldn’t! Magneto is happiest playing with his ball or running outside next to you. He has the most expressive eyes, and is so handsome – without fail he gets compliments every time we go for a walk. He’s very eager to please and very willing to work with me when I want to teach him a new trick. He’s the absolute perfect dog, ready to set out on new adventures with his new companion. Could that be you?

Other notes:
SAFER ASSESSMENT:
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, body soft
Tag: 1. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins.
Squeeze 1/ 2: 2. Dog was difficult to position. Pulls out on both attempts.
Toy 1: 1. Dog plays, does not keep a firm grip, will relinquish toy to you.
Summary: Magneto may do best on a harness as he pulls hard on leash; may benefit best from daily mental and physical stimulation to positively direct energy and enthusiasm.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Play Skill Novice: These dogs lack appropriate skills to engage in proper play. They may become stuck on one behavior; lack pauses or breaks in play and often ignores warning signs from other dogs to slow down. Play should end when the other dog in the didactic pair signals it is over.
PLAYGROUP:
Magneto’s finder cites him as playful around dogs, and having previously lived with a small dog. When introduced off leash to another dog at the care center, Magneto is initially interested in mounting. He shows very brief interest in engaging in play, however then loses interest in engagement. The behavior department recommends slow introductions with dogs in a future resident home.
10/18: Magneto is more intent on attempting to mount the other dog (female).
10/19: Magneto frantically attempts to mount, becomes anxious and roams when unable.
10/20: Magneto ignores other dogs and paces the pen while whining.
10/21: Magneto is anxious when interacting with a dog that does not engage in play with him–he whines and jumps at doors. He corrects if mounted but will then mount the other dog.
10/22: Magneto continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs.
10/25-10/27: Magneto engages briefly in play when solicited, however is quickly anxious when other dogs do not engage with him.
10/28-11/3: Magneto engages in vocal running play with group of dogs. He continues to solicit and engage when offered correction by a dog that is not comfortable with his playstyle.
11/4-11/5/16: Magneto engages in rough, running play with males and females.
4/29/17: Magneto ignores the other dog. He is anxious and will seek exit and handler attention.
5/4: Magneto engages in exuberant play with another dog.
5/10-16: Magneto engages in bouts of running play with other dogs.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During his initial medical examination, Magneto allowed all handling.
ENERGY LEVEL:
In a previous home, Magneto is described as having a high energy level in line with what has been seen in the care center. Magneto is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience)
Potential challenges:
_X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
_X_Anxiety: Magneto has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Magneto, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.

10/11/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
10/11/16 17:14 Basic information: Magneto is a 1 year old male. He was found as a stray 3 weeks ago. He was surrendered because he is too active for his finder. Socialization: Around strangers Magneto is friendly and outgoing and when he plays he is exuberant and somewhat rough. He lived with a 2 year old female Chihuahua. With her he was very playful and somewhat rough at play. Behavior: Magneto has not attempted to bite a person or animal. When he hears storms or fireworks he hides. If his food bowl was touched he would move away. If a toy or treat was taken from him he was very playful. He was not allowed on furniture. He isn’t bothered if he is disturbed while sleeping or given a bath. He was friendly if an unfamiliar person approached his previous home or finder. For a New Family to Know: Magneto is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, pushy and excitable. He has a very high activity level and the thing his previous owner liked most about him was he’s friendly. When his finder was home he would tend to follow him around. He liked to play with balls, and chew toys. He was kept indoors and at night he slept in a crate. He ate dry pedigree. He is house trained but urinates when excited. He destroys household items when left alone. He chews and pees on furniture. He is crate trained and does well for 8 hours. He was walked 3 times daily. On leash he pulls very hard and off leash he wanders but comes when called. Behavior during intake: Magneto allowed me to pet him, collar him and take his picture. He showed no signs of aggression
10/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Named for one of the characters in the X-Men Marvel Comic book series, our Magneto is every bit a real life hero! Gorgeous in his tan coat, his clear eyes make soft contact with a promise of a good time to be had by all. He’s seems to be super housetrained (as befitting a super hero), taking care of his business endlessly the moment we were outside. As energetic and playful as Magneto is, he settled down quickly when it was photo time, posing perfectly for my camera, sitting when asked and doing that head tilt thing that melts my heart. Such a good boy. The person who found him and kept him for 3 weeks tells us that he lived with and played (sometimes roughly) with a small dog, and is housetrained (yep). On his first playdate at the care center he had brief interest in engaging in play. Off leash Magneto loved playing with a toy, tossing it around and amusing himself all the while wagging his tail. I love a dog who’s self sufficient in play. Fun, friendly, energetic and smart, Magneto is looking for an experienced person to provide structure, guidance, leash training and lots of love. He’s a super hero for sure, and is looking for his super hero human with whom to spend his forever. Come meet him today.
