01/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Finn has been quick to use his mouth, showing likely poor impulse control, a low threshold for arousal, and slow de-escalation. During a recent play session in a pen, Finn became fixated on objects and was difficult to distract. He jumped and grabbed a mesh bag hanging from the fence. He then began to mouth and tug at the handler’s jacket. When the handler tried to place a leash on Finn to move him out of the pen, he grabbed at the leash and eventually chewed it into several pieces. Treats were used to draw his attention but they only distracted him momentarily. Finn chewed through a second leash, and began stiffening/freezing briefly when handlers approached while he was chewing the pieces of the leash. A large stuffed toy was needed to distract Finn sufficiently to be able to leash him. He was returned to the kennel without further incident. Due to the range and intensity of the behaviors seen, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification and guidance on impulse control before placement into a permanent home. Finn also showed some concerns when introduced to a greeter dog; please review Finn’s GroupBehavior entry for additional details. 1/19 SAFER: Finn pulls a bit on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Finn did a lot of jumping up, body checking and played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction and did not calm down easily. Finn took the toy with a soft body language. Finn show some concern during the tag interaction he became over arousal. He also became uncomfortable around other dogs during the playgroup interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 3. Dog responds with his tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. he does not place her body between you and the toy.
01/14/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When an initial attempt is made to introduce Finn to the helper dog through the fence, Finn offers a brief sniff before charging at the gate while growling. A muzzle is applied before allowing an off leash interaction. Once allowed in the pen, Finn is stiff-bodied, and stands tall when approached by the helper dog. He offers a brief low growl when she begins to walk away. Finn arrived into our care from a household with two other male dogs, however, his in-home behaviors around them are unknown. Based on the observations made on Finn while in our care, the behavior department advises against any immediate placement into a home with another dog, until he has been given time to acclimate into a stable environment where these behaviors can be followed up on.
