05/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Like the greats before him, Figero from the opera The Barber of Seville or The Marriage of Figero, and Figero, the cat from Pinocchio, our Figero will find his fame as well. He’s an awesome little guy with skin that needs some TLC, but that doesn’t stop him from being quietly playful, and respectfully affectionate. From a game of tug (I let him win, but don’t tell him that), to sweet kisses on the park bench, this little guy won my heart right away. Likely housetrained as he pottied the moment we were out the door, his leash manners are lovely, he wagged his tail gently at all the little dogs out for their morning walk in the park, and watched the pigeons cross our path also enjoying the cool spring morning. He seems fine with little critters, no pulling towards pigeons or little dogs, just quietly and gently observing with an easy tail wag. Enjoying some treats, Figero is then in my lap for some kisses, and while he doesn’t purr like Pinocchio’s cat, he shows his appreciation of attention with his cuddles. And because of his opera name, I serenaded him as well, and he’s such a gentleman he didn’t laugh at me! He’s a seriously wonderful little guy, who hopped right back in his kennel when our time together was over, and when he saw me later in the day gave me a woof and a tail wag in happy recognition. Figero, Figero, Figero… Come meet him today.
05/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/1/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/3/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, mouths the hand, with a little pressure. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Mouths assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Figero was very mouthy during his assessment, applying moderate pressure. He demand barked at people in the room, barking apparently for attention. He was social during his assessment and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Figero engages in soft play with female dogs in the care center. He has not yet been introduced off leash to another male dog in our care, so behavior around them is unknown. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Figero and respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/3/17 During his initial medical exam Figero was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Figero so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the amount of mouthiness seen on his assessment, we recommend Figero be placed in a home without young children. Older, dog savvy children should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges:
_X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Figero was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Figero puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways. _X_Leash-biting: We recommend walking him with a toy in his mouth and not engaging with him if he grabs the leash. Positive reinforcement training is advised
