05/25/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A stranger in a strange place…Fetely isn’t too sure about any of this, and hugs the back wall of her kennel, not sure if making a new friend and taking a walk is really what she wants to do. She has a gorgeous face, a bit wrinkly, intense, stunning amber eyes, cute ears that seem to speak their own language, going this way and that. We’re outside, and Fetely goes potty immediately, and while she shows me excellent leash manners, it’s clear she’s a bit anxious about it all. She checks up as we walk, her pace perfectly in step with mine. Off leash in the yard, Fetely explores the pen, greets other dogs with a tail wag as they pass by, and finally gives me a big smile and allows me to pet her. This, of course, after some treats (which she sits for) and some sweet talk. Fetely wants to make friends but seems unsure of how this friendship thing works. She wears a gorgeous, shiny, rich cocoa color coat, her weight is perfect for her size and it’s clear she was well taken care of. In playgroup, she does better with males than with females, soliciting play with bows. A slow and easy approach, a soft voice and some treats is the way to this beautiful girl’s heart, and every step will bring a reward. The best things in life are worth working for, and Fetely is no exception. A lifelong companion, unconditional love, and a best friend are waiting to meet you, all wrapped up in one gorgeous package named Fetely. Ask to meet her today.
05/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Feteley came in as a stray so behaviors in the home are unknown. She was quiet during intake, but was very stressed during her initial medical exam, growling and attempted to bite the scanner. Feteley was nervous for collaring, but allowed it with a slow approach. She walked nicely on leash for her relief walk, pulling slightly. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, distracted and focused on assistant. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, ears and tail neutral, body soft. Feteley was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, settled easily at end. She gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Feteley playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm grip with her paw, loose wiggly body. When off leash with other dogs, Feteley offers polite greeting. She continues to approach with a loose body and wagging tail. She attempts to solicit play by offering bows and a few spins. Due to the significant amount of time required for collaring and allowing handling, the Behavior Team feels Feteley would do best in a home without children. She would benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, possibly with treats, as well as going home to a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and warm up at her own pace. Feteley appears to enjoy the company of other dogs and may benefit from sharing a home with another playful dog. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, distracted. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is distracted and unresponsive, settles easily at end Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip with her paw and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Feteley offers polite greeting. She continues to approach with a loose body and wagging tail. She attempts to solicit play by offering bows and a few spins.
05/22/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Feteley engaged in play during her first off-leash interaction but has since only displayed uncomfortable and defensive behaviors. She arrived at the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing her into a home with other dogs as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her new environment before doing any introductions with the resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Feteley offers polite greeting. She continues to approach with a loose body and wagging tail. She attempts to solicit play by offering bows and a few spins. 5/24 update: Feteley is more tense-bodied when greeting a female dog. She offers correction when solicited. 5/26 update: Feteley is tense when greeting. She corrects lingering greeting. 5/27 update: Feteley is tense upon entering the yard with both a male and a female dog. She quickly relaxes after initial greeting then spends her time exploring her surroundings.
