A volunteer writes: Winning my “Best Smile” award, Fern has that wide ear to ear great pittie smile I swoon over. She’s a gorgeous girl with a tomboy like figure, sparkling eyes and a wagging tail. Her pretty tan coat is highlighted with gorgeous symmetrical markings on her face. We head to the park after she goes potty (which she does the moment we are out the door), and while she pulls on the leash initially, settles into a nice rhythm with me. Fern doesn’t mind being tethered for photos and poses like a super model. Off leash in the back she’s interested in a toy, playing for a short while, poses for more photos and always with a huge smile and a wagging tail. I was told that after she was intaked she hung out in the office with staff and fell asleep as they worked. How sweet is that! She’s a friendly girl with a winning smile, and hoping to win your heart. She’s even smiling in her intake picture and that’s pretty special. Wouldn’t it be fabulous to come home to that smile every day? Ask for Fern today.
02/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 2/4/17 Spayed, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Not good with other dogs Behavior toward cats: Not good with cats Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: Yes, Xena has bitten another animal (no further details on this situation). Xena has also bitten the daughter in the home, growled and lunged at her left thigh drawing blood and puncturing skin when mother/daughter were rough housing. Xena then bit the daughter again on her hand resulting in a deep puncture, drawing blood when mother/daughter were standing having a conversation. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Affectionate with a high activity level Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: Summary: Though Xena has displayed social behavior towards her consistent and familiar caretakers, we believe a handling assessment is inappropriate to conduct at this time due to her multiple bite history as well as being uncertain of potential triggers. Out of concern for her stress level and for the safety of our staff, we feel that Xena is not a good candidate for a SAFER at this time. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/4/17 During her initial medical examination, Xena was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owners describe Xena as a high-energy dog. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Xena be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Xena to acclimate comfortably to her new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Xena to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Xena presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Xena has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that she offers when he feels threatened. Xena needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Xena as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
