09/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Calmly seated with eyes softly gazing at me and tail gently wagging as I approached her kennel, I knew I was in for a treat! After a couple of attempts I leashed her for our time together. With impeccable manners, she took care of business as soon as we were outside, and then continued to walk calmly and slowly by my side. As other dogs passed, she acknowledged them but didn’t lunge at them. A big plus! Any time I called her name and blew her kisses, she promptly turned my way for some lovin’! She’s a low-maintenance dame that doesn’t appear to need a whole lot of exercise. Fergie’s a real find!
another volunteer writes: A petite pittie Princess dressed all in blue, Fergie recently lost her castle and now she’s looking for a new kingdom to rule over with a velvet paw. Unlike some rulers she’s not at all pushy and waits quietly in her kennel for a friendly human to notice how clean her throne is and how much she’d love to get outside and take care of her royal business, go for a leisurely stroll through the park or indulge in some snuggle time. She’s happy to come, sit and stay for treats and would be more than willing to expand her repertoire in exchange for additional tasty gifts or just some wholehearted praise, petting or a silly mutual smooch session. Fergie doesn’t like to share the spotlight with other dogs but as long as they keep their distance she’s happy minding her own business and will generally ignore anyone passing by in the street as long as she’s given the proper respect. Her dream home would be one where the ‘Queen of this Castle’ crown rests on her head alone and all the toys are right where they belong, snug in her bed. She’s aced all her handling tests and now Fergie’s ready to wow a new family with her well-bred good looks and great manners. Are you ready to offer this Queen-in-waiting the royal treatment she deserves? Give Fergie the happily ever after story she deserves by stepping up today!
09/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Fergie came to the care center as a stray so her behavior in a home is unknown. Upon intake, she was friendly and excitable. On her relief walk, she walked nicely. In the assessment room, she appeared calm. She held the assessor’s gaze for Look, body neutral. For Sensitivity, her body was a bit tense, mouth was closed, ears back, tail down. She followed slowly for Tag, body low, tail wagging. Fergie did not pull back her paw on either Squeeze attempt. She displayed minimal interest in the Toy, sniffing it. When introduced to another dog in the care center, Fergie stiffens, barks, and snaps at the gate. A muzzle is applied before allowing interaction to continue. Once off leash, Fergie growls when approached, and eventually jumps on the helper dog’s back while continuing to growl. The Behavior Team recommends that Fergie be placed in an Experienced home. She would benefit from a slow approach and slow introduction. The Behavior Team also feels that Fergie would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a new home, before following up on her behavior around them outside the care center environment. Look: 1. Dog holds. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down, body tense, mouth closed, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. Minimal interest. Dog may sniffs toy. Dog-Dog: When introduced to another dog in the care center, Fergie stiffens, barks, and snaps at the gate. A muzzle is applied before allowing interaction to continue. Once off leash, Fergie growls when approached, and eventually jumps on the helper dog’s back while continuing to growl.
