06/04/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A case for Ancestry.com???? Those little Sharpei ears are unmistakable, his serious face a bit wrinkly, and he can be a bit aloof as the breed sometimes can be, but give him a chance to roll in for snuggles and steal a kiss and he’s right there! As I pass his kennel he paws at his door letting me know he would so appreciate a chance to go out and go potty so responding to his plea we did just that! He’s serious, easy, quiet, calm, wagged really hard at a little dog in his kennel as we passed by, jumped up on the bench to give me a kiss, and ignored my offer of treats and toys. Ferdinand (such a perfect name for this dignified gent!) has clearly been well taken care of before joining us and is looking for a new person or family to love. In playgroup he greets others politely and when not engaged prefers to roam the pen. I can relate to Ferdinand’s need to warm up to people and other dogs before revealing himself, and his new home should give him the space and time he needs to do just that. He warmed up to me quickly with hugs and kisses, so I’m pretty confident he’ll reveal himself in a very short time. The name Ferdinand means “peaceful journey”, and that’s exactly what our slightly shy Sharpei mix boy is ready for….a peaceful journey into his new home.
06/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ferdinand walks calmly on leash. He was fearful and repeatedly attempted to get away from the handler during the assessment. Ferdinand was tense during handling, with fearful body language. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Ferdinand became stiff and uncomfortable during paw handling. The behavior team used flank squeeze (he still uncomfortable with the touch). He was not interested in toys . Ferdinand shows some behavior concerning behavior during some of the handling part of the assessment. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter no children who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 3. Dog stands tall and square. His tail perpendicular to spine, mouth closed for the majority of assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, and becomes stiff Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Ferdinand is sexually motivated, and engages in play with intent to mount.

Ferdinand has only displayed sexually motivated behavior when off leash with other dogs, and has not been introduced off leash to a male dog. He was observed to growl at male dogs through a barrier. He arrived as a stray, so in home behavior is unknown. 5/31: When off leash with other dogs, Ferdinand is sexually motivated, and engages in play with intent to mount. 6/1 update: Ferdinand postures to mount, doesn’t fully, instead begins to roam around. 6/2 update: Ferdinand is sexually motivated. 6/3 update: Ferdinand greets, then roams. 6/4 update: Ferdinand approoaches the gate barking and growls at a male dog.
