06/26/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/26/17 21:07 Fello is a 6 year old male large tan dog who was surrendered to the ACC due to the fact his owner could no longer care for him properly. The owner stated that she found Fello on the street when he was a puppy and has had him ever since. Fello has no known medical issues. Owner stated that when around strangers Fello is friendly and outgoing. He has spent time around children and he is relaxed and affectionate. When playing with children and adults he is exuberant. Fello has not spent time in the home around other dogs or cats so it is unknown how he will react. Owner stated that overall Fello behaves very well. During fireworks and loud noise Fello is terrified and will panic. If someone touches his food treats or toys he is friendly. He isn’t bothered if he is restrained, pushed off the couch or disturbed while he sleeps. He doesn’t mind being bathed or brushed. He has never had his nails trimmed so it is unknown how he will react. When someone unfamiliar approaches his house or family member he is friendly. Owner described Fello as friendly affectionate and playful with a very high activity level. When at home he will follow his owner around. He likes to play with balls and stuffed toys. He has been kept mostly indoors and eats dry food. Fello is very much house trained and never has accidents. When using the bathroom outside he will go on the grass or cement. When left alone in the house or yard he is well behaved. He has been crated before and does well for 6-8 hours at a time. Fello knows the come and sit commands. For exercise he is used to brisk walk in the leash or playing in the yard. When off the leash he will wander but comes back when called.

Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes, Fello is crate trained, and does well 6-8 hours at a time. Energy level/descriptors: Owner described Fello as friendly affectionate and playful with a very high activity level SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/28/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Fello was friendly and displays a high activity level towards the assessor though remained mouthy throughout his assessment. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Fello attempts to mount both male and female dogs. According to Fello’s previous owner, Fello has not spent time with other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Fello be placed with resident dogs that are tolerant of his mounting behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 6/26/17: Unknown MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/26/17: Fello was very friendly, tail wagging. Sniffing around lots. Curious. Happy dog.

ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Fello has displayed an intense level of grabbing at objects in the care center. He jumps up and grabs things (novel objects.) and is reluctant to let go of them. He has traded these things for treats. He will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to leave things alone and not jump. If he does grab something, he should always be traded for a treat. Nothing should ever be forcibly removed from his mouth. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Fello applies hard pressure when mouthing and was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Fello puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways.
