07/21/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A BBB boy…Big, Black and Beautiful…carved from pure alabaster and inlaid with ivory. Fargo made quite a number of admirers yesterday in the yard as a group of corporate visitors came to meet our dogs. He might be strong on the leash, but free in a pen, he moves with poise and grace. He is a true socialite, goes from one person to the other, sits on command, takes very gently treats (he has a soft mouth), wags his tail a lot, tries the kiddie pool: one foot, two feet, and then lays down to cool off. He was quite a sight, all spread out in the water. It must have felt good…smart boy. Fargo seems to like other dogs, even the little ones. In playgroup with his peers, he engages in bouncy play. Fargo is a dark knight and it makes him look older and more serious than he truly is. He is indeed a young man, powerful and gentle, friendly, loving and so lovable who dreams to be your loyal and fun forever companion. Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. He is the one you have been looking for…
08/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for FARGO A1118858 KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/18/17 Unaltered male, Stray Foster profile 8/10/17 Neutered male, in two foster homes for a few days each In both homes, Fargo was noted to show calm behavior in the home, but difficulty handling on walks to the level that he needed to be returned to the shelter. Both fosters reported severe and unfocused leash biting with concerns about redirecting. In one home a double-leash method (so one leash could be dropped as soon as Fargo began chewing on it) was successful to manage the leash-biting but Fargo would become overly aroused with no clear trigger or provocation, moving from biting the leash to mouthing and tearing at clothes to mouthing hands. One superficial scratch occurred but when aroused to this level a second person was needed to interrupt the behavior. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/19/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor consistently and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps on assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Fargo was social throughout his assessment and allowed all handling. He jumped up on and became a bit mouthy with the assessor during portions of the assessment. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Fargo is soft and polite when interacting with dogs in the care center. He has displayed interest in gentle play with female dogs. He has appeared soft and interested in greeting male dogs in passing, but has not yet been introduced to one off leash. Slow introductions are recommended between Fargo and social, respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Fargo was playful and allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/18/17 During his initial medical exam, Fargo was active, social, and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Fargo is is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to the jumpy and mouthy behavior displayed at the care center, and to the over-arousal concerns seen while walking on leash, we recommend a home without children. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: The severity of Fargo’s behavior while outside on walks and his rapid escalation appear to be beyond what an average adopter can manage without additional training and behavior modification guidance. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can work with Fargo to modify these behaviors and who can provide Fargo and his new adopter or foster with additional support. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Fargo has shown some mouthiness in the care center and in foster homes. Little pressure is applied but there is potential for continued escalation and increased force. This is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Fargo’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Social hyper-arousal: Fargo has shown a tendency to escalate when out on walks and to continue escalating and directing that energy and attention toward his handler. The precise stimulation/motivation for this behavior is not currently clear, but Fargo will need guidance to learn how to deescalate more quickly and direct his energy in a more appropriate manner.
