01/04/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Esteban, otherwise known as WiggleButt (a definitely less noble surname) is an imposing young man who seems to have had quite a rough life. He is very underweight, ridden with calluses, dressed in a second or even third hand coat and wears the old mark of a muzzle on his face. He must have been a gorgeous puppy, maybe the king of the litter. Esteban, indeed, is a large male, strong and powerful despite his undernourishment. He is very welcoming in and out of his kennel. It costs him to hurt his tail that is now bandaged. He is affected with the “Happy Tail ” syndrome. Esteban is happy to see people and dogs alike. Little pooches are fine too. His butt is wiggling non stop, so is his body and his tail wags and wags away. He pulls on the leash and does his business on the walk without much marking. The birds do not seem of much interest to him. Free in a pen, skinny Esteban is very interested in my treats. He is indeed and rightfully, a hungry caterpillar. He can sit for roast beef but will jump forcefully too, to get more. Esteban comes when I call him, rubs himself on my legs as I settle on a bench, and begs for caresses. He is quite needy of human attention and affection. Esteban and I met again. I saw another side of him. As soon as we entered a pen, he noticed a tennis ball. Esteban was right on it. Then he saw another one and yet a third and a fourth one. He wanted them all. A collector. What an athletic and muscular dog he is, throwing himself into the air to catch a ball and savor it thereafter. He is quite a magnificent sight who will be a masterpiece in the right hands. Esteban has a lot of the qualities that make a loving and devoted best friend but will need the savvy and strong hands of an experienced owner to polish his manners and tame his strength. He is one of a kind, waiting and dreaming at the Manhattan Care Center to be your loyal forever companion
01/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Esteban pulls hard on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up. He was excited during some of the handling items, but had soft body language. Esteban was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. He took the toy with a soft body language. Esteban appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
01/09/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Esteban briefly greets and may re-approach when the helper dog solicits play, but he does not engage in play. He is more interested in exploring his surroundings.
