We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Essence.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No cats: Essence is reported to hard bark at cats in the care center. While this does not confirm Essence’s behavior around cats in a home environment, since we have only the in-shelter information and out of an abundance of caution we recommend against a home with cats. If she needs to meet cats in the future we strongly recommend training her to wear a basket muzzle, keeping her on leash, and making sure the cat has multiple close, safe locations to retreat to. New hope partner: Due to behavior concerns shown in the care center, Essence has been noted multiple in-shelter situations to become easily aroused/overstimulated and when she does she engages in mouthy behavior. Essence will need to learn alternate behaviors to avoid placing teeth on skin, she is extremely active and enthusiastic. The owner voiced no concerns and we have not seen any aggression or intent in injure in the care center but she displays a very low threshold for arousal and we feel that adopters will likely need significant counseling, we recommend NH placement at this time.
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/Arousal: Essence has been noted in multiple in-shelter situations to become easily aroused/overstimulated and when she does she engages in mouthy behavior. Essence will need to learn alternate behaviors to avoid placing teeth on skin. We recommend ending interactions when teeth meet skin and rewarding Essence with attention when she is calm.
