PROFILE :
Basic Information:
Enzo is a 10 year old altered Australian Cattle Dog. He was bought from a breeder as a puppy and is being surrendered due to the progression of his aggression over the years. He has visited the vet on an annual basis and has no known health problems or injuries. Enzo has started to have a small limp on the front right leg, the limp is not always apparent.
Socialization:
Enzo has lived with a child that was 4 years old at the time of adoption and is now 14 years old. Enzo has been relaxed around the child and gentle during play but recently (not in the last 10 days) has bitten the child when she was playing with the other dogs in the home. He lives with 2 Aussie/ Chihuahua mixes that are altered. They are 2 and 4 years old. Sometimes Enzo is affectionate with the other dogs and will groom them and sometimes he will growl and snap at them. He has not spent time with any other species of animals. Within the last year, Enzo started to lunge and growl at strangers on the street. This does not happen with every person he sees but is has increase to more people over the last year.
Behavior:
When Enzo hears loud noises such as fireworks or storms he may bark. Enzo will growl and people and the other dogs in the home if they come near him when he is eating or has treats. If they continue to approach he will snap and/or bite. This is the same with toys. They owner states this is common behavior when Enzo does not want to do something (come inside, take a bath, be leashed, removed from furniture). This behavior has become progressively worse over the years. Enzo is not bothered when brushed. When someone approaches his home he will bark and nip at the stranger’s feet.
For a New Family to Know:
The owner describes Enzo as shy, mellow, excitable, independent, fearful, and anxious. He has a low to medium activity level. He likes to play with balls and play tug. He sleeps on his dog bed that is in the bedroom. He is fed Taste of the Wild dry dog food once a day in the morning. He is very housetrained and well behaved when left home alone. He has not been crate trained. He knows commands in French and some in English. He knows sit and come. He is used being walked twice a day. He is also used to playing in parks and yards. He wanders some when off leash but comes when called.
BEHAVIOR
4/13 SAFER, ‘New Hope Only’ rating
Enzo previously lived with 2 adults and 14 years old. The owner stated Enzo has been relaxed around the child and gentle during play but recently has bitten the child when she was playing with the other dogs in the home. The owner mentioned Sometimes Enzo is affectionate with the other dogs but will sometimes will growl and snap at them, he would also lunge and growl at strangers. It was reported by the owner Enzo will growl and bite if someone goes near him while he’s eating or has treats. The owner also mentioned Enzo has bitten the other dog in the home if the dog is playing or resting Enzo will walk over them growl and bite them if they don’t leave. The owner stated she was calling Enzo inside and he would growl then she walked over and grabbed his collar, Enzo turned his head and bit the owner hand.
During SAFER Enzo came into the assessment room nervous and tense, he was a bit social but cautious about his surroundings and the handler. Not all handling items were able to be conducted as Enzo head flip and lip curled at the assessor on the Look item. He displayed no interest in the toy item during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a new hope partner who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
Look: 5. Dog head flip and lip curls at the assessor.
Toy 1: No interest.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Enzo has a tucked tail and paces slowly around the pen but does not initially approach the gate. Eventually he does greet the helper dog very briefly and then backs away. Once let into the pen, Enzo chooses not to interact with the helper dog, who is kept on a leash due to Enzo history and the fearful behavior he was displaying today.
