SAFE 10/30/17
Hello, my name is Empire. My animal id is #9522. I am a male charcoal dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 11-Oct-2017.
Empire 9522 is at risk for a respiratory illness (CIRDC). Behaviorally, he has been highly social and interactive, exuberant and playful with both humans and other dogs, though he does engage in frequent jumping and mouthing during interactions and so may need guidance to learn manners and impulse control. Due to Empire’s tendency to become overly excited, we are recommending an adult-only home for him at this time.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Empire told me he’s very confused, as everyone keeps saying to him, ‘You’re stunning’, and he thought his name was Empire, but is it Stunning? What’s a dog to do? I told him not to worry, as long as people are talking to him, that’s a good thing! He is stunning, that’s for sure, his coat clean and healthy, his weight perfect for his size, his eyes bright and shiny. Empire loves toys, loves balls, and the look of excitement on his face as he waits for my throw is priceless. Empire showed me his sit, and gently takes his reward treat, showed off his housetraining skills, and batted the tennis ball around in the pen like a soccer pro. We enjoyed some bench time with kisses, and then this big galoomph ran off to greet a dog in an adjoining pen with an excited tail wag. Empire has enjoyed bouncy play with a female, and as of this writing has not been in group with males. He’s a big boy who doesn’t realize just how big, so it’s recommended that he be adopted into an adult only home so there’s no risk of knocking over little ones. It doesn’t matter what you call him, as long as you do, so come meet our Empire today. Maybe Stunning should be his middle name? Empire Stunning _____(insert your last name here).

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Empire so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing Empire displays at the care center, we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Social hyperarousal: Empire quickly became over aroused on his assessment, jumping up and mouthing the assessor. He will need positive reinforcement, force-free training to teach him to remain calm in the presence of excitement. Any time he becomes over aroused, people should walk away from him and ignore him. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Empire has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Empire’s teeth make contact with skin).
