A volunteer writes: Emily is a shy dog, she tries to hide and make herself as small as possible in the kennel, but with a little coaxing she comes out, we head to the play yard where she allows me to stuff her full of treats 😉 eventually she comes close to me and rests nearby.. After a short while she attempts to give kisses. Emily is so pretty she has an amazing soft grey coat and brownish eyes. Emily will need someone who will give her time to open up and trust them. If you are interested in adopting Emily please come to the Care Center and meet her.

For a New Family to Know:

5/19/2017

ENERGY LEVEL:
Her owner describes Emily as having a low to medium activity level which matches what we have seen in the care center. Emily’s owner reports she enjoys balls and rope toys, and would benefit from regularly playing with these items to keep her engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behavior outlined below)
_X_No young children (under 5)
Potential challenges:
_X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Owner reports Emily has recently snapped at a stranger while on awalk when the person came too close. She reportedly tolerates children but is not playful. Emily appears to give clear warnings when she is uncomfortable, choosing to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Emily, to build positive associations through treats/toys/praise, and to allow Emily to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to submit to handling or petting, and should be spoken to in a soft, calm voice during introductions.
