05/04/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/04/16 16:46 Elton is an adult male APBT / American Staffordshire Terrier mix. He was found in an abandoned house and brought to ACC by police. They report that he was friendly with them and well-behaved in the car. Elton had a loose, wiggly body, wagging tail, and open mouth while we pet him, scanned him (-), removed his collar and harness, collared him, positioned him for pictures, and walked him. He lied next to me while I worked at the computer and whined a little. He didn’t pull hard on his leash.
05/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: On a day so gloomy and wet that there seemed to be no hope for anything other than damp socks, Elton buoyed our hearts in under a minute. As two of us strolled with him down the block, we started giggling at his constantly wagging tail, his sweetness, his delight in kissing us even as the rain fell. Junky weather, the misfortune of finding himself without a family at the moment–none of this seems to mitigate this boy’s joy, tenderness, and desire to express love. He’s wonderful on a leash, he’s gorgeous, and he can turn a day around within three wags of his tail. We’re not alone–his kennel card is marked with other volunteers and kennel officers who have had the same experience with him. There’s no day that won’t be made better by beginning and ending it with Elton as a companion. Note: The following video refers to Elton as “Hazel,” who has had a recent name change. The correct name is Elton. Another volunteer writes: Elton has this cute little bark as if he can form words. I think he was trying to tell me in human words that he would like to go out for a walk. I told him that he was totally understood by me. He sat so proper in his cage with his tail smacking the ground. When we went out for our walk he was so excited to be out he almost thanked me with his beautiful eyes. As we waited to cross the street I got down next to him and got a super happy guy licking my ear. What a cutie pie, I think he sees himself as a lap dog. Its hard not to love this dog after just hanging out with him for a few minutes.
05/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Elton came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter environment. Elton came into the behavior room with soft and wiggly body language. He did seem wary of fast movements toward his head and would flinch quickly when this happened. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. He held the gaze during the Look item, but did so with a hard stare and tense body language. He maintained soft body language during the sensitivity item and only displayed minimal interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. We recommend Elton go to a home with an experienced owner that will give Elton a bit of time to warm up to them and acclimate to his environment. Look: 3. Dog holds eye contact with a hard stare, body a bit tense, mouth closed, ears back. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. When off leash with other dogs, Hazel greets and sniffs, then roams the yard.
05/05/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Elton engages in bouts of play with female dogs, often with the intent to mount. He offers polite greeting to other male dogs. Elton arrived into our care as a stray, so in-home behaviors with dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatability with a resident dog. When off leash with other dogs, Hazel greets and sniffs, then roams the yard. 5/9 update: Elton solicits bouts of play with the intent to mount the other dog (female). 5/10 update: Elton engages in short bursts of play with other dogs, at times with the intention to mount females.
