09/09/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Elton cannot to be ignored. He is a beautiful specimen of the breed, lighting up his kennel with his brown, black and golden lush coat. And those eyes…so aware, so intense. Elton dislikes being in a kennel, and it is quite understandable. He is a large dog, probably used to a yard or a large space. I had to ask for some help to get him out, and once on the leash and in the street, Elton was singing a different song. He attended to business right away and walked pretty reasonably well, pulling only slightly at times. I petted him on the head, and it was well accepted. Elton did not go after birds, and two large dogs appearing few yards away did not produce any ill reaction. He dealt properly with being tethered for the photos. He even sat on command and took a dried lung treat properly from my hand. Can I say that I “know” Elton? Certainly not, but he seems to have the potential for being a good and loyal friend. He just needs the space to be himself, and a human or family that he can love.

09/07/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Elton was difficult to remove from his kennel very vocal (barking) but once he was removed from his kennel he walks calmly on leash. He was not sociable, and was more interested in the surroundings than the handler during the assessment. Elton was calm and relaxed during handling. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Elton became stiff and uncomfortable during paw handling. The behavior team decided to use the flank squeeze instead; Elton does not respond at all to the touch. He showed no interest in toys. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification. We also recommend a home without young children; older children can be considered pending interaction. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog becomes stiff and the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. 9/9 update: Elton’s kennel presence and behavior toward other dogs prevents him from remaining in out adoptions room. Please see the GroupBehavior entry for more information about his dog-dog behavior. When approached in his kennel, he may snarl and charge the door; we cannot be certain of the motivation for this behavior, and he remains handleable outside the kennel, but in order to reduce stress and prevent rehearsal of this undesirable behavior, we recommend that he move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible.

09/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
09/08/16: Elton arrived into our care as a stray, so there is no available history of previous interaction with other dogs. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Elton lip curls and continues to bare teeth upon approach. He actively avoids the female greeter until she turns her back. He sniffs toward her rear end from afar. The behavior team feels that Elton would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a new home at this time.
