Ellaria
Hello, my name is Ellaria. My animal id is #19663. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 01-Feb-2018.
Ellaria is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Behaviorally, because during a tag exercise, she became fearful, and jumped at the assessor barking with a tense body, we recommend Ellaria would be best suited to an adult only home.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
My medical notes are…

Upon intake Ellaria came in with a tense body, whale eyes and her tail tucked. She stayed to the back of the car that she came in and attempted to stay hidden. Counselor and staff member went out to the car to get her and she was very tense but allowed being petted and lifted by the staff member. During the intake Ellaria was weary of approaching the counselor however allowed being petted and collared. Counselor gave her a can of wet dog food which she ate quickly. She then allowed the counselor to place her in a kennel.

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: While Ellaria has exhibited fearful behavior during her time at the Care Center and will sometimes avoid the leash initially, she has also become more comfortable outside of her kennel to the point that she will actively solicit attention from employees in the hallway while out on a walk, remaining loose & wiggly for the duration of her walks. She walks on a leash with minimal pulling and allows the handler to pet her. She returns to the kennel with ease and the leash can be removed from her without difficulty.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to her response to the tag item on her assessment, jumping at the assessor hard barking, we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: During her assessment, Ellaria became fearful during the tag item and jumped at and hard barked at the assessor. She has been social at other times, but this may be her reaction when very uncomfortable. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended if this behavior presents an issue in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Ellaria to new and unfamiliar situations.
