A volunteer writes:

Fear and Great Beauty…This is what I remember from my first encounter with Ella, a young gal just relinquished into our care. She looked appalled  in her kennel but accepted my leash after a few tries. The cold was biting hard outside but I could not put a scarf around her neck and even less a coat. I had to find a quiet, warm and safe place to get to know her…Forget about daylight pictures. I had to make this damsel comfortable. She is absolutely gorgeous, all dressed in cream  and mocca. She looks like an angel. Her eyes are green. Her nose,  red. She is clearly part American Bulldog. I was in awe, admiring her and so sad to see her distress. Oh, I missed something…Her nails are painted pink… the work of a child, no doubt about it. Indeed, Ella lived with kids and even a small dog. She  was playful with them but the game was a little rough at time due to her size and strength. Ella comes with very good comments on the part of her previous owners but she became destructive when left alone and she had to go… There are remedies to the issue but it needs time, effort and enough love for a pooch to make it happen…Ella’s breed is an active one, a working breed  who does not fit the couch potato’s description and probably was not the best fit for this family…When came the time to put her back in her kennel, Ella had not yet found her bearings. She never looked into the eye of the camera. I sat at the edge of her den and petted her softly. Her body relaxed. She felt safer in a small place even with me in it. She started licking my hands and then my face…We talked and talked…and wished for better days…i promised that I would return and that others would try to help her too…Ella needs an experienced new owner , knowledgeable  of her particular breed and this gorgeous princess might end up to be a most loyal ,loving  and well mannered best friend. Ella is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of her new life ..with you
