08/29/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: If you’re as good as the company you keep, then having Elijah at your side will make you the coolest kid in town! He is a dreamboat/piglet hybrid that is just irresistible! He is short and squat, one of his paws looks like it’s stuck in third position, and his face is as animated as a cartoon. He insists on checking out all the smells the outside world has to offer, but once you get his attention, he’ll quickly leave those behind. He isn’t bad on leash, seems housebroken, and is very treat-motivated. He loves to play fetch and stands on his tippy toes as he waits for me to throw the ball. He might get a little humpy when he’s TOO excited, but I haven’t had any trouble re-directing him to more gentlemanly behavior. He is a little wiggle worm when getting butt scratches, loves being talked to, gives stand up hugs, and even flops over for belly rubs! He is SUPER charming, sweet and fun…and he could be yours: come check him out at Brooklyn ACC!

08/26/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/24/17 Unaltered male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/26/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Summary: Elijah was friendly and social towards the assessor. He showed no concerning behavior. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Elijah rushes the gate and displays wide eyes and a high tail when greeting a novel male and female dog. He stiffens his body and hard barks at them, and then escalates to lunging. Due to this body language he is muzzled before an off-leash introduction is attempted. Once he is allowed into the pen, his body remains stiff and still. The interaction is ended without removing his muzzle due to the inexperience of the male greeter. Elijah was brought in as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Elijah be the only resident dog at this time. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/24/17 At intake Elijah snapped, and hard barked when the counselor approached. When a second staff member(male) approached Elijah was calm, and allowed the counselor to collar. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/25/17 During the initial examination friendly, initially allows exam/treatment, then needed rope muzzle for placing microchip. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Elijah so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Elijah displays a medium energy level in the care centers. RECOMMENDATIONS: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the (behaviors outlined below). _X_Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Elijah has shown during playgroup (see GROUP BEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Elijah should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. 08/25/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash at the Care Center, Elijah rushes the gate and displays wide eyes and a high tail when greeting a novel male and female dog. 8/25: Elijah rushes the gate and displays wide eyes and a high tail when greeting a novel female dog. He slowly stiffens his body and hard barks at her, and escalates when she becomes reactive. They are separated, and he is introduced to a more experience greeter. He displays a high wagging tail, while pacing back and forth. We introduced the dogs first on-leash when the pen was opened because Elijah’s body language was inconclusive. He pulls towards the other dog, and becomes pushy with his greet, while displaying a stiff body. 8/26: Due to his previous behavior during group, Elijah was muzzle before entering the pens. He displays a tall stance and a stiff body, with a novel male dog. He eventually becomes occupied with the muzzle, and could not focus on the greeter. The session was ended.
