06/12/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Little Elektra, dressed in the most elegant latte coat is with us at the Manhattan Care Center. She is a well nourished pretty little mouse with giant ears and velvety dark eyes. Elektra is very shy and has to be coaxed with gentle words and caresses out of her kennel. I have to pick her up, tuck her under my arms and aim for the yard. Down on the ground, she does her business right away then explores, sniffing majorly the premises. What’s this place , she must be thinking to herself !! Where is my house? Where are my people? Elektra accepts my caresses, a stop on my lap but she is not really there…It will take her time…Only a home sweet home and a master or family will make her heart bounce again with joy…We hope that soon enough, lovely Elektra will find her way to the place and the masters she dreams of…Come and meet her soon…

06/10/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Elektra came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed in shelter environment. She was very timid and nervous when out of her kennel and walked very slowly on leash due to her fear. Elektra had fearful body language when entering the behavior and did not approach the assessor for an interaction. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items without displaying any signs of aggression. However, Elektra did maintain nervous and fearful body language during all most handling items of the evaluation. During the tag interaction Elektra was fearful but unresponsive toward the handler. She showed no interest in the toy item on this portion of the assessment. When on an on-leash dog interaction Elektra did not approach the helper dog and would not walk on leash at all. We recommend that Elektra go to a home with an experience owner and no young children at this time due to her fearful nature. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is trembling a bit and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, and body soft to the touch, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, trembling. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is crouching, may have long lip. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog does not approach the helper dog. Does not move at all.
