04/15/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: It’s been proven that owning a pet is good for one’s well being, and that eating Edamame as a snack has nutritional benefits. Combine the two into one little frosted face sweet dog and wow! So quiet in her kennel, and shyly allowing me to leash her, ED (yes, we’re on a nickname basis now) hops down and out we go. ED goes potty the moment we’re outside so may be housetrained, she’s lovely on leash, gentle and soft. In the park she poses for photos like a pro, making soft eye contact and being so patient with me as I try to navigate the sun’s shadows. Noticing other dogs that pass us by, her tail wags gently at them. She sits when asked (sometimes), enjoys her reward treats and snuggles in close for some petting. ED hopped into her kennel at the end of our time together, sat side saddle on her bedding and flashed a great big smile of thanks. Sweet, shy, calm, low key, and gentle, this little girl is looking for a new place to call home. Come meet her today.
04/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/13/17 Spayed, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/16/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Does not follow. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Edamame was very fearful in the assessment room and throughout her assessment. She was tense, had a tucked tail, and avoided handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Edamame interacts politely with respectful, calm dogs in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions to polite dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/14/17 During her initial medical exam, Edamame allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Edamame so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Edamame is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Edamame gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Edamame to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
