08/29/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Eclipse is a very handsome knight who caught my eye right away as he came in to the care center. I looked straight at him…If anything blinded me, it is his beauty. He is tall , trim and superbly dressed in a slightly wavy and shiny coat, so soft to the touch. His eyes are golden and his tail, bushy. Eclipse was a bit shy and anxious in his first days. He can be aloof when he does not know you but warms up as time goes by. Although calm in his kennel, Eclipse comes at once to his door when he sees an interested visitor. He is leashed easily, pulls a little, does his business on the way and sniffs a lot his new territory. He is interested in other dogs while he is a little shy in playgroups with his peers, males and females. Eclipse likes to be free in a pen. He loves treats and sits for them. He knows what a ball is and inconsistently jumps high and runs after it. He bonds after a while and comes on his own on the bench for caresses and even kisses. He is not camera shy and that makes me quite happy…Eclipse is a very good looking dog, reserved but with the propensity to be playful, sociable and loving according to the circumstances. His heart so desires to have a home to call his own and a master to love. Come and meet Eclipse soon at the Manhattan Care Center.
08/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/21/17 Neutered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/23/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low, and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Eclipse was a bit tense at times but allowed handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: Eclipse initially required time to warm up before becoming comfortable around other dogs in the care center. He most recently has opened up and displayed interest in vocal, running play styles. He has displayed discomfort with more exuberant, rough styles of dog play. Based on these observations in the care center, the behavior department feels Eclipse may be most compatible with slow introductions to respectful dogs, or dogs who engage in a similar style of chase play. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Eclipse was social. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/22/17 During his initial medical exam, Eclipse allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Eclipse so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Eclipse is a bit fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Eclipse the option to walk away from any social interaction. Eclipse should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Eclipse’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Eclipse would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
08/22/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Eclipse initially required time to warm up before becoming comfortable around other dogs in the care center. 8/22: When introduced off leash to the female greeter, Eclipse is fearful and keeps only to herself. 8/23: Eclipse engages briefly in running play. As play intensifies, he becomes more vocal. 8/24: Eclipse keeps only to himself. 8/25: Eclipse greets a fearful female politely and attempts to solicit play, occasionally vocalising, but is respectful when she does not reciprocate. 8/26: Eclipse engages in running play with a group of male and female dogs. He becomes slightly uncomfortable with exuberant play.
