05/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ebony has consistently demonstrated highly fearful behaviors since arriving at the care center. She has allowed only minimal touch and is easily spooked by noises and by fast movements. She has shown some potential for sociability but is clearly uncomfortable with handling and with close proximity. She needs more intensive counterconditioning than we are currently able to provide in order to acclimate to this environment. She barks and lunges in her kennel when approached, and if the door is opened she frequently retreats to the back and avoids being leashed. Ebony has shown warning behaviors (growling, head flipping), but has not escalated to a snap or a bite at this point. However, due to her clear discomfort and avoidance of handling we feel she is not a good candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time as we do not wish to push an already very fearful dog. We have no known behavioral history. We feel the best course of action is to place her with a New Hope partner who is prepared to provide her with any necessary positive reinforcement behavior modification she may need, and who has a management plan in place for any concerning behaviors she may demonstrate.
