A volunteer writes: Are you ready to be adored like a rock star? Searching for some snuggles to start the day off right? Looking for that one true love who’ll always stick by your side no matter what? Then you’ve come to the right place! The Duchess of Snuggledonia is here, and the line starts ’round the block for a date with this gorgeous, gentle and super cuddly ‘velcro dog’. She’s gaining confidence daily, and with each walk she takes and new friend she makes, another level of adorable sweetness is revealed. Duchess didn’t want to step out at all on our first date, turning sadly toward the back wall then trembling in my arms as I carried her downstairs (the Duchess doesn’t do stairs, at least not yet) but the minute we got outside and two of her fans spotted us and rushed over to say hello, the ‘real’ Duchess came out to cuddle and put on her best tail wagging, butt wiggling show! Giving away kisses like they were going out of style, she was clearly in her element, and the love fest continued throughout our photo session as she stuck to my side in a way that made taking pictures difficult, and falling head over heels in love so SO easy. Aside from her apparent fear of stairs, Duchess is a great leash walker and happily strolls right by my side, greeting other dogs of all sizes with happy curiosity, quietly sniffing her way through the grass and taking treat after treat gently from my hand. My heart sings when I see a once-shy dog blossoming into the social butterfly she was born to be, and as Duchess and I parted at her kennel door, it was happy smiles and open hearts all ’round. Beautiful inside and out, she simply couldn’t be any softer or more loyal if she tried. Come meet the Duchess of Snuggledonia at our Manhattan Care Center and bring home a lifetime supply of love today!
Another volunteer writes: What a difference a day makes! Sometimes even royalty needs time to get their bearings! Up front in her kennel, welcoming everyone and ready to be leashed for a walk, Duchess steps gingerly down from her kennel and out we go. Lovely on leash, ignoring small dogs we pass, Duchess never stops wagging her tail (her equivalent of the royal wave perhaps?), and is all about hugging and kissing and snuggling with her person. She’s shy about going in new directions, finding comfort with what’s known, and yet is learning every day! Where previously she wouldn’t walk the stairs up and down from the second floor, I’m told she now manages them. Off leash in a pen her happy place is cuddled in close, and as my colleague dubbed her, The Duchess of Snuggledonia, is more than appropriate. If a lifetime of cuddles is your idea of the perfect companion, Duchess is hoping you’ll stop by to meet her in adoptions today.

She was very receptive to being reassured in a soft, soothing voice, body always remained soft. PLAYGROUP: Duchess has displayed interest in brief play and socialization once comfortable with select dogs in the care center. Behavior around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. Slow introductions are recommended between Duchess and respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 7/26/17 Upon intake Duchess was shy MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/26/17 During her initial medical exam Duchess allowed handling ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Duchess so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Duchess displays a medium level of energy. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful- Duchess has been observed to display fearful behavior during her stay at our care centers, has been hesitant to go up and down stairs or walk on leash in very loud areas. She has shown good coping skills when uncomfortable. We feel she will do best with an adopter prepared to allow her to warm up to new people and new environments slowly. Duchess should never be forced to submit to petting or any situations that she is not comfortable with. Use of treats and a soft gentle voice will help to make new experiences positive. Force-free, reward based, positive reinforcement is advised as any other techniques will most likely make her fears increase. Once warmed up, Duchess is affectionate and solicits attention.
